Dusit Thani carvery

Post by barrys »

It was herself's birthday a couple of days ago, so I decided we'd do something special - and I'm really glad we did.

We opted for the Dusit Thani Carvery Buffet on Monday evening.

We started off in the Polo Bar there for aperitifs - happy hour from 5 - 7 p.m.
Cocktails were priced at 130 baht net, so we went for Long Island Ice Teas and Pina Colada.
Not only were the cocktails excellent, with plenty of the important ingredients, we were also served with a small bowl of mixed salted nuts and some canapés.
The waitress, on seeing that we'd finished the canapés, immediately brought us some more.
There was also a pianist playing pleasant background music on a grand piano.
We had 5 cocktails in all between 4 of us and the bill was 650 baht - no extras, so excellent value and impeccable service.

We then went down to the buffet.
It was held in a beautiful atrium restaurant area with a huge chandelier and a pianist playing on the gallery above.

We had reserved a table overlooking the pool through the glass wall.
The food was incredible - huge choice and beautifully prepared

The following is the list of dishes available that evening:
Cold - Salad & antipasti Bar with condiments & dressing
- Half Giant prawn with egg & paprika filling
- Trio of capsicum mousse with goat cheese (in glass)
- Pork Pie with Mango Chutney
- Black Forest ham with grilled green asparagus and parmesan shaving
- Assorted terrine & pate with cranberry vol au vent
- Kohlrabi remoulade with smoked trout (porcelaine)
- Fish and seafood galatine with shrimp vol au vent
- Assorted Caviar with condiments (blinis / honey whole wheat bread )on ice
- Tomato herring / Roll mops / marinated herrings / potato salad
- Rock lobster Parisienne
- International cheese (around 12 different types) with crackers and Bread (walnut, country, rye etc..)
- Smoked fish and marinated salmon with condiments on ice table
- fresh oysters with condiments (rye bread / honey whole wheat bread ) 2 ice shell

Soup - Lobster bisque

carvery - Roast Charolais grain fed beef with gravy
- Roast pork rack with fluffy potato
- Roast butterball turkey breast with glazed chestnut
- Roast shoulder of lamb topped with herbed crust

- Yorkshire pudding - Fried Onion ring - Paprika stick –twisted brioche
Hot dishes
- Grilled Butternut squash - Green peas and baby carrot
- Roasted new potatoes with Cajun spice - Brussels sprouts
- Roasted Parsnip - Swedes and Mash potatoes
- Fried rice with shredded crab and roe - Chicken and mushroom pie
- Goose curry madras / tamarind chutney / nan bread / roti
- Scallop and shrimp with creamed fennel and tarragon in Vol au vent
- Dory fish fillet with green asparagus white wine sauce
- Braised chicory endive roll with ham gratinated with Mornay sauce
- Short pasta with salmon and creamed vodka sauce
- sauté trout

Dessert - Tropical Fresh Fruits cut
- Cream caramel
- Pear bourdaloue
- Fresh cheese cake with forest berry
- Apple crumble
- Summer pudding
- Ice cream & sorbet
- Cherry clafoutis
- Peach Melba cake
- Prune tourte
- English trifle

We had over 4 hours to gorge ourselves on whatever we wanted.

As far as drinks went:
Because 3 of us are dedicated wine drinkers, we opted for the additional free-flow wine offer, which worked out at 750 baht net each. Table water is complementary.
There were about 6 wines to choose from and you can chop and change as you wish. We went for a South African Cabernet Sauvignon and because it was that good, we stuck with the same wine all evening.
So if you're going to drink more than 1 bottle of wine over a period of 4 - 5 hours, which we easily do, it's a really good deal.
Every time a wine glass was close to getting empty, there was a smiling waiter or waitress there to top it up immediately.

I had also specially ordered a 1 pound birthday cake. It arrived at the table right on time with candles, greeting and name on it, the pianist playing happy birthday, and the entire waiting staff singing happy birthday at our table.
My gf was quite overwhelmed and the cake tasted absolutely superb.

As the end of the evening was approaching, the head waiter came and asked us if we wanted to eat more, as the buffet was closing at 10.30 p.m.
We said we were fine and would just have some more wine - he then told us that we could stay drinking until 11 p.m., which we did.

The charge for the buffet itself was 850 ++, i.e. 1000 baht each.
and they didn't even charge us for the birthday cake.
For somewhere with such ambiance and superb quality, I found it to be amazing value for money.
So for that special night out, I can really recommend the Dusit to everyone.

I would like to thank all the staff there and especially the head waiter, Khun Piya, and Khun Jon for making sure that we had such a fantastic evening.

Did you sample each dish, Barry?
And I understand why you looked a bit jaded on Tuesday.

Agreed - considering the status of the Dusit as a 5* place, the buffet prices are very reasonable.

Myself, Mrs T and our two boys are regulars for Sunday brunch when I'm home and the choice is ok

Prices are ok too - adults THB750++ and kids under 12 THB500++ - booze is extra

Staff are always pleasant

In around 2002 or so the HH darts team folks went to a 'do' at the Dusit to watch the incomparable Phil Taylor - darts supremo then and now - in a demonstration match. It was nothing short of a superb evening with superb buffet - the like of which many of us had never seen before in the HH area - or anywhere else. We were well impressed. Good to know that the Dusit continues to maintain such a high standard.

And for even better value remember they have a free taxi service both ways, so the wine deal is a really good option.

I gained two kilos just reading Barry's report!
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Just had this thread brought to my attention and on behalf of the hotel would like to thank barrys for his kind, detailed and very accurate comments, which can hopefully go some way to overcoming the flawed myth that all leading hotels are overpriced and overrated for both food and drink. Let's say it's more a case of knowing when and where to wine and dine.:thumb:

Given the variety of food on offer, we do indeed consider the price is very reasonable for any of our regular weekly buffets, the aforementioned Carvery on Mondays, or Pasta Factory Italian Buffet on Wednesdays, Thai Market Night on Fridays, Barbecue Buffet on Saturdays and Sunday Lunch Buffet on the day of rest. Our chef takes great pride in ensuring that each menu is indeed at least as extensive as the one that barrys has kindly taken the trouble to list.

Each weekday buffet weighs in at Baht850++ (Baht1,000net), the Saturday barbecue is Baht990++ (Baht1,166net)and the Sunday lunch buffet is Baht600++ (Baht706net).

The 'Bottoms-up Bonanza' is a choice of six wines (three reds and three whites) + one sparking wine, which can be mixed and matched to your heart's content throughout the meal. Taking into account wine prices in general around the Kingdom, we hope you will agree Baht550++/person (Baht647net) is a reasonable option. For those not wishing to overindulge, there are also several thoroughly decent wines available by the bottle for under Baht1000.

We are always happy to provide a personalised homemade complimentary cake for special occasions, though 24 hours' advance noticed is appreciated.

For pre- or post-prandial drinks we offer not one, but two 'two-hour happy hours', our Happy Aperitifs from 5.00 - 7.00P.M. and Happy Nightcaps from 9.30 - 11.30P.M. when great discounts are offered on most drinks. There is also another 'unlimited' option during these periods when draught beer is available freeflow for just Baht250net.

A lengthy first post and thanks for bearing with me. Suffice to say that sometimes words don't do justice, so please feel free to come in and see for yourself, then post your thoughts - good or bad -up on here.

Hope to welcome you.
