It's very different from a marriage visa where it needs to be seen that you're married and living together. The big difference is that you can work with a marriage visa where you are strictly forbidden to work on a retirement visa.
I can see no point of home visits. What can they possibly achieve?
I'm pretty sure the reason is that the Thai government wants to keep track of where people are living. Kind of the same reason you're supposed to submit a TM30 if you change address.

So despite you informing them of your address, which is also on the back of your driving licence, they need to physically check. If you're in a rented accommodation then they've had sight of the owner's details.

Seems to me a complete waste of manpower. But TIT.

A buddy of mine just went to a nasty divorce. Now he has not enough money for his visa change to retired and extension next year. Within 2 years he will have the funds, as he told me...
Does anyone know a visa agency that assists in supporting bank documents relating to the 'bank balance' visa... I read about it but am not able, like him to find one on the web and he also prefers a reference.....

I've never tried it, but I've heard if you call into either of the visa shops on Soi 94, they will try to help.

Thanks... I guess I will have to go with him. He is a little older close to 80 I think. He always seems a little lost.
Anyway
I understood from the web that the kind of service he needs is actually 'not allowed'. He needs it for 1 maybe 2 extensions..
Will he be able to do it himself when all this is done?? Because some of what I read hinted that it would be impossioble to get the agent out of your hair, once you aks them for help...

Don't over think this and expect to pay!

The 'agent fee' varies widely from person to person, agent to agent, immigration office to office, and depending on what 'services' or finances are required. It is not a set amount; some pay 16-17k, some pay as much as 40k for the 'full monty' which includes opening bank accounts, etc.

Don't forget, Thais love free money, so try to negotiate - don't accept the first figure offered.
