It's very different from a marriage visa where it needs to be seen that you're married and living together. The big difference is that you can work with a marriage visa where you are strictly forbidden to work on a retirement visa.
I can see no point of home visits. What can they possibly achieve?

So despite you informing them of your address, which is also on the back of your driving licence, they need to physically check. If you're in a rented accommodation then they've had sight of the owner's details.
