Now they've had a rare, but significant, earthquake... perhaps early-warning seismometers would be beneficial? Given the poor build infrastructure in most places, it could save lives?

Early warning seismometers? What are those? Seismometers can only detect an earthquake when the shock waves from the earthquake reach them. By which time it's obviously already too late to do anything about it.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt on Friday said foreign search and rescue teams are starting to leave but the Thai team should be able to handle the remaining work as they have learned from foreign groups and have exchanged relevant information with them.

He added that the Japanese team has yet to arrive but they will be helping Thailand with earthquake warning system and inspection of damaged buildings.

I thought it was all hands to the pump in search of the voices they could hear. Have they sent the other teams home to claim credit for the Thai rescue teams? I hope they don't cock it up.
