There was no briefing yesterday, so I guess the 31 March video was the last.

I've got to ask the question, Why? If its a sizable earthquake, do they really need to spend ฿9M? Surely, somebody will notice. If its a small earthquake, do they need to know? Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted comes to mind. Are they going to evacuate the hospitals for every minor tremor?

Chadchart wants B9m for seismographs

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt will propose a 9-million-baht budget for procuring earthquake measurement devices for eight high-rise hospitals.

Mr Chadchart said the attempt follows the Bangkok City Council's rejection of a similar proposal in September 2023. He said the proposal would be presented again, as the previous rejection likely stemmed from a lack of perceived urgency.

"Many may not have understood the importance of the project at that time. It's understandable, as large earthquakes have not been felt in the area for a while. However, with recent developments, perspectives may have shifted," he said. He said the request could be included in the 2026 fiscal budget or could be paid for through central government funds.

The project aims to install earthquake-monitoring devices in high-rises at eight Bangkok hospitals, including the Thani Nopparat Building at City Hall in Din Daeng area, which is 37 storeys tall, and other buildings such as the 72nd Anniversary Building at Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital (24 storeys) and the Somdet Chao Phraya Taksin Maharat Building at Taksin Hospital (17 storeys).

The total cost would be nine million baht, a modest sum given the importance of the data the devices would provide, he said.

Mr Chadchart expressed hope that, if feasible, the number of installations could be expanded beyond the hospitals initially proposed.

"This technology is now more affordable and can provide valuable data for analysis. Installing these devices in both government agencies and private entities will increase data reliability and public confidence," he said.

Google provided this -

Earthquake Early-Warning Systems:

These systems use seismometers to detect earthquakes and provide warnings before the arrival of strong ground shaking.

They can help people take protective actions, such as evacuating buildings or shutting down critical infrastructure.

Evacuating a hospital full of sick people - sounds a bit far fetched to me.

Now they've had a rare, but significant, earthquake... perhaps early-warning seismometers would be beneficial? Given the poor build infrastructure in most places, it could save lives?

I'm not convinced - especially as they are reassuring people that anything built after 2007 is earthquake proof.

Think about it, hundreds of bedridden patients - can't use lifts because of earthquake. What do they do? Throw them out of windows? Its such a massive task, at what point do they start evacuation? They'll soon get fed up with dozens of unecessary evacuations of bedridden patients. I honestly can't see it working. I'm all for health & safety and saving lives, but how many times will they cry wolf before getting fed up?

I know only what I’ve recently read about this subject but it appears to be fairly prevalent in major earthquake areas - presumably they get plenty of minor tremors?

I'm certainly not convinced with that statement lol. I've seen the building practices in Thailand first hand. Bamboo scaffolding and all... :D

Smoke and mirrors to convince the visitors Thailand is still safe, and while they are here, why not buy a condo in Bangkok

Interestingly, bamboo has a higher tensile strength than steel and is particularly beneficial as scaffolding in earthquake zones (googled).

That said, they do it soley for monetary reasons otherwise they wouldn't have 50p an hour Myanmar Phyo climbing precariously on that shit barefoot.

Meh, this is a lie.

After further research, 'structural' steel has double to quadruple the tensile strength. I'd landed on some tree-hugging vegan site throwing out bullshit it appears. Why it's important to search multiple sources.

Depends. I think the higher quality builders get 50p by the hour.
