The Beer Thread 2
Re: The Beer Thread 2
Found another Thai beer. This one is brewed by Thai Spirit Industry (Chachoengsao) for Hoppy Folks Brewing which seems to have only one beer so far; an India Pale Lager they call Love at Sundown. The can features a graphic sunset which kind of resembles a skull under the letters LSD. The ABV is 6.3% with an IBU of 40. I don't know what hops they used, but the beer is quite bitter with not much malt for balance. My wife liked it. I thought it a bit much. The big surprise was the price; almost 200 baht for a 490ml can at Gourmet Market in The Mall, Korat. Most of the beers produced by Thai Spirit Industry come in at 100 baht or less. My guess is that the price is a mistake.

One more thing (promise). I see that Gourmet Market now has a very limited stock of Heart of Darkness beers brewed in Saigon. It's crazy expensive, but worth it for a treat now and then. I especially like Kurtz's Insane IPA (7.1%), Loose Rivet New England IPA (7.5%) and The River IPA (5.7%). According to Untappd, Heart of Darkness has produced 580 different beers.

Re: The Beer Thread 2
My favorite beers over here. Had never tried Loose Rivet until two days ago. I was in Huê and the pub I was in had it on tap. Very, very impressive. I just got to Da Nang yesterday and I know that my favorite watering hole here, Bamboo 2, will have Kurtz’s ready to go. Looking forward to it. Man, beer is cheap in Vietnam!Ratsima wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 7:24 am One more thing (promise). I see that Gourmet Market now has a very limited stock of Heart of Darkness beers brewed in Saigon. Re: The Beer Thread 2
The Heart of Darkness beers were in Lotus's in Market Village very briefly, just long enough for me to buy a few and sample them. Excellent. Then they disappeared. However, if you look for Mee Chai 'The Art of Thai Craft' beers, and examine the label on the back you will see that they are brewed by Heart of Darkness brewery in VN. They are, from memory, half the price of the HoD beers. I like to think that I can explain some things, but beer availability in Thailand is not one of them.Ratsima wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 7:24 am One more thing (promise). On the subject of beer - I have seen (and tasted) Hanuman beer from Cambodia, last bought at the supermarket in BluPort.
Re: The Beer Thread 2
I thought the price of beer in Thailand was partly determined by the alcohol content? The more of it, the pricier the beer.
Talk is cheap
Re: The Beer Thread 2
I think its more controlled by the monopoly content. The more of it, the cheaper and pissier the beer.

No idea about Thailand which often does things rse about face, but many countries charge duty based on alcohol content so stronger beers are more heavily taxed.

Re: The Beer Thread 2
Just seen this on Google- The 10 cheapest pints in the world including Vietnam at number 4
These 10 countries have the cheapest pints in the world
Uzbekistan - 70p
China - 90p
Madagascar - £1
Vietnam - £1.02
Ukraine - £1.06
Belarus - £1.07
Philippines - £1.25
Colombia - £1.28
Azerbaijan - £1.29
Kazakhstan - £1.34
Whilst the UK can often be very expensive, our local Wetherspoon’s must be one of the cheapest!!

Re: The Beer Thread 2
Here in Macau, you can get 2 litres of relatively good beer for about 3£ in a shop but you pay around 8-9€ for a pint in a pub. The exception was a recent food festival, where they were selling beer for about 5£ a pint. The reason is that the rents are so expensive here. These 10 countries have the cheapest pints in the world
