This is the bird that I am referring to. One way to spot one of the starling family is that when on the ground they walk rather than hop. It is known as the Common Mynah for obvious reasons.

Tey will hang around on perches well after sunset but will not fly much as they do not have good enough night vision like an Owl or Heron

Tey: group of birds or that gather in perching positions after sunset for reasons of self-preservation in numbers.
The tey were particularly noisy last night before the monsoon.

Difficult to figure this one . Must be a translation thing or you are chirping up the wrong telegraph pole. Nok Iang is the name of a bird (in Thai) and the topic of this thread.

I am not at the Bar and I have nothing whatsoever to do with the legal profession. If in fact you meant bar, I don't go to those either.

To get out and enjoy oneself and sit at a PC all day sure requires some kind of GSM or satellite connection and a laptop. That to me would be like a busman's holiday. Unfortunately I have to spend a few hours per day communicating with people over the Internet to enable me to complete my research into the behavior of the clinically insane. This is not something I would do by choice but is part of my job.

Anyway your interest in my well being is gratefully received but unnecessary. I am very content with my life and have been for some time. The many options for the future makes life even more rewarding.

Personally I would rather go out without a PC and far away from an Internet cafe and enjoy the countryside and the flora and fauna.

I am not saying that that is what everybody should do but walking up and down Soi Bintabaht and then spending the afternoon in an Internet cafe pretending to be someone else is not my idea of enjoying life. Does your employment require you to study the pros and cons of bars and bar girls in Hua Hin or is this some thing you do in your leisure time? I hope for your sake it is the former and if so you have my sympathy. It must be a heart wrenching arduous task.

Everyone to their own I suppose.

Nok Iang?

Post by Chas »

Though I am no expert. .and I have noticed that Thai people will use the same name for very like things and not make distinctions. (I think all whales are called "pla wan" for example.) I have been taught that those common brown birds which you see hopping about in pairs or very small groups are nok Iang. They have a yellow patch near the eyes and are common in daytime just about everywhere (They make rather annoying whistling noises.)

Dont know what the starlings are called in Thai, but I remember seeing them in San Antonio, Texas along their River Walk. They nestle in the trees at nightfall in huge numbers and take off at dawn for who knows where. They are also common in Mexico and seem to like the parks in large cities.

We were in San Antonio as tourists and our trip happened to coincide with some football ritual which involved marching bands on floats moving up the canal to a big hotel. ( I know nothing of the wierdness that is American football. . though I am American.. . and this may be part of the game?)

Anyway, the band started to play some rousing march, scared the shit right out of the birds and everyone under said trees got "rained on"! Not a pretty sight. .though we got spared.

I you you read back thought the thread you will find some answers to your comments.

With much of wild life people refer to the family name as in many cases it is the only one they see in that family. A crow or a seagull are good example.

My understanding is that Nok Iang is the family name for the minah sub group of the starling family. They are very common all over this region and are even found as far away as Australia.

This is done in the English as well. When you refer to a seagull it could actually relate on of many different species within the same family.

I don't think it is any different in Thailand. The different species have different Thai names but in the case of Nok Iang that is the only one seen by 99% of the population.

There is not always a direct translation for animal types either. The fact that a whale is called Pla and an Ape is called Ling is not through ignorance. Most Thais I have spoken to are well aware that dolphins and whales are not really fish but the same word for both has been handed down through history just as monkey and ape have the same name although an ape is more commonly nowadays referred to as a Ling Yai.

There are quite a few farang in Hua Hin that fall into the Ling Yai category. A few of them have even learned rudimentary keyboard and English skills.

Sorry for the delay but have had such a nice Christmas I had forgotten about these rambling's

I am not the only one that has sussed your multiple handle's, 3 or 4 including your wife's. Upto you, one way to get cheap publicity to the Ex Pats that come on this site, sure they know, the majority anyway.

Bintabaht, not walked down their for some time, usually at Palm Hills or Lake View in the afternoons, sometime's take the wife to Cha Am or stay at home and swim in my pool.

I assume Christmas was not too good as you have been here every day? Little monotonous but who am I to judge, you are not alone on that score.
Wake up, pull the green corrigated iron door open to reveal the 3 concrete walls you call home, cup of tea and switch on the ex rental internet cafe PC to communicate with the Hua Hin Ex Pats. Hope a customer walks in to break up the afternoon/evening.
Still if it works for you then OK, must be awfull having to do this everyday waiting for an offer to cut and run? :?

How did you two manage to get into a slanging match on a thread about songbirds, is it a negative reaction to the festive season?

I'm sure you are aware of the t&c's of this forum, Skandiii, multiple usernames are not allowed. Isn't handles CB talk? Showing your age? Guess has one username with us. His wife, lovely lady who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time recently has another. I'm not sure how far you progressed in school, but I did quite well and even my 5 yr old will tell you 1+1=2 (if you're being pedantic & counting family memberships!) not 3 or 4. Thank you for your attention. :tsk:

No STEVE G, I don't understand either. Perhaps he thinks that having an interest in Fauna and Flora and answering someone's question as to the species of bird seen in Hua Hin is in someway abnormal. Judging by the number of serious responses and the original question it would seem not.

As for enjoying Christmas (the festive season) is concerned, I can see no relevance. I too have enjoyed the period as well even though I am not a Christian. Having lived in multicultural societies for most of my life I have taken part in many festivities. A good thing about Christmas for me is that I get to meet up with people that I do not see on a regular basis.

Why these inane untrue statements have been leveled at me is a mystery.

The only response that I have that I have made to skandii was on another thread "The Best Bars in Hua Hin" or something like that, where he listed a number of bars as being the best. Sugarcane then replied, which she is perfectly entitled to do as she is a sponsor of the site, and mentioned her bar. Skandii then responded with a load of abuse which then started off a whole load of criticism, all of which was against skandii. I also responded. I would have responded in any case but as it happens, and as any sensible regular poster already knows, SugarCane is my wife so the insulting and untruthful remarks meant more to me than that if they had been against another bar.

All of the remarks made are untrue and this latest one is just pathetic.

Fact
I only have on ID on HHAD subject to the Ts & Cs of the site. If the majority can only estimate 3 or 4 then they are hardly sleuths are they. Is it 3 or 4 and if this majority are so sure why don they not report me to Lev as I would be in breach of contract.

My wife also has an ID and so has my daughter although she rareley uses it. I do not advertise any business on this site so cannot get cheap publicity. The only publicity I get is from delivering a free service for the community and some publicity for my wife's business which she pays for. All businesses require some sort of marketing and HHAD has proven the ideal solution for my wife. I would certainly use it in the future for other business ventures.

What the hell has this got to do do with the species of birds near Satakurn Square?

Bintabaht, not walked down their for some time, usually at Palm Hills or Lake View in the afternoons, sometime's take the wife to Cha Am or stay at home and swim in my pool.

More inane irrelevence

Christmas was OK for me and I did exactly what I wanted to do. The only problem was having to turn down so many invitations. You must have had the same situation so you know the feeling.

The green color of the doors was not my choice but I personally think it is an improvement on the normal battleship gray.

If you have actually seen the green corrugated (correct spelling) doors and looked up you will out that the building is actually made of wood. (Mai Deang). I am sure that they maybe others like yourself who would like to pull it down and put a four story concrete eyesore in its place just to make a few quick bucks, fortunately the owners of the property do not agree and intend that the building remains in situation for many more generations. As they are a very influential local family that owns most of this block I think they will get their way. It is what is known in English as heritage.

The cup of tea in the morning. Now you have actually (probably by sheer luck) got something spot on. A cup of tea in the morning and tea accompanying food the Chinese way is one of my greatest pleasures.

But then you screw up big time. My PCs start at the server (off site) being a 4GB RAM, 3.2 GHZ Intel Processor, 2 terabytes of data storage, plus, plus, then a second lesser high spec PC and a third PC that probably actually was an ex internet cafe. It is on all the time so does not need to be switched on ever and only goes off in a power cut. Those figures obviously mean nothing to you you but in layman's terms it is about the same amount of computing power as two average Hua Hin Internet cafes.

To summarize and finalize.

Your reactionary to my wife did not bother her at all but I think you should take a leaf out Sargeant's book a realize that you are a guest in Thailand and she has Thai nationality and was born here and so were her eight brothers and her parents.

The Thai authorities consider her a Thai citizen. She and her family are also very well respected both in their home where they are major land owners and here in Hua Hin where she has many influential acquaintances, so launching an unjustified attack on her business it little short of insane. Fortunately she sees the humorous side of your remarks and views you as a child in a man's body.

That was the summary. Now the finalization.

I will not waste any more time responding to anything posted by you under whatever name you choose. The name (or handle as you refer to it) is spotted within two or three posts at most. Up to now I have just made polite responses and played along with it. That era has come to an end now as I am getting to busy with my research work.

I am sorry to say but from now on all postings from you and any others that post in a similar manner will be ignored. This ignorance will extend to any form of communication whatsoever by any means whatsoever either to myself, my wife's business or any organization that I am affiliated with.

Please don't think I am being rude in not responding but I have wasted too much time already with you and it has to stop right here. I have the support of my wife, my friends, friendly intelligent posters on this site, my colleagues and the local authorities, all of of which have stated that I have spent far too much time already.
