Birds

Post by Kraka's Dad »

Does anyone know what are type of birds that sing and twitter by the traffic lights at Satukarn Square at night ? Feathered ones !!!!
It is unusual for birds to be vocal at night (Owls etc are an exception).
There seems to be lots of them there every night chirping away to their heart's content.

It's a bit too dark to see, but I always thought they were mynahs.

That's why I was asking as I could not see what they were.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I don't know a huge amount about birds of the feathered variety, but they do look like starlings, they are certainly not exotic to look at.

They're definitely starling sized, but I don't remember seeing a starling here, which is why I thought they were mynahs. Mynahs can be bloomin' noisy too. One fell into one of the big water bowls I keep in the garden for the dogs to sit in & cool off, once. I was alerted to the fact by about 10 others circling the bowl & chattering & screeching. Managed to rescue the bird (no mean feat with 30 dogs taking a keen interest  ) & release it outside, and they all disappeared. Very clever (& loyal) birds!! :D

I'd reckon sparrows or starlings.
We get a lot of mynahs around out house and I don't recall the birds you're all talking about being that big or coloured like a mynah. I'm also no ornithologist though.

Check out this link. I've actually seen these in Bangkok by the thousands on the wires at Silom and Rama IV. During recent years unfortunately, the numbers are down to maybe a few hundred the last time I saw them. Maybe a clue. Pete

A Mynah or Mina is a Starling. Several genera of the Starling family are Minas. The birds that are common here and twitter after sundown in certain places are Common Minas but I am not sure if they actually have an accepted English name. I have forgotten the Thai name but could be Nok Keow. The international language for classifying all life forms is Latin. The name in Latin is Acridotheres tristis.

So, they are Starlings and they are Mynahs. They are definitely not sparrows if, as Darwinian says it was early evening, although they too are very common in Thailand but they go to roost before sunset.

The only true night flying birds are Owls and Night Herons. Both of those are found locally as well. There is a barn Owl living in the roof of the Wat in Soi Poolsuk.

I 'd sometimes thought about the Birds @ the corner of Satukarn and Hua Hin Municipality as many times my friends and I where walking by Satukanr sqare to the Market behind the san Paolo Hospital. I'm not a Bird expert but from my point of wiev they might be Sparrows. In my old Univ. campus inside Palm Hills we have Mynah there gathering around the Bowls of water we have @ our Admin.Building they were not nearly as loud as the ones @ Satukarn and Municipality.

In my expirience those birds start to sound up as soon as sun sets and stop well after the night had settled in. somebody interested in Bird watching overthere by a couple of Glasses of Beer?
