Thai bank: customer is wrong, go to another bank

Post by buksida »

I've been a "customer" with K-Bank for about 12 years now and am known personally in our local branch which, up until today, has been very helpful.

The banks have recently changed their system on how they process cheques so after six years of depositing the same cheque in the same account every month I'm now told "mai dai". The names don't match so they cant process it, my middle name is used on the account but not the cheque - hasn't been a problem up until now.

Me: Ok, can you delete the middle name from my account?
Bank: mai dai
Me: Ok, can I open a new account with just my first and last names?
Bank: mai dai, same name on passport
Me: What do you suggest?
Bank: change cheque
Me: It has worked for the past 6 years and is issued by a very fickle internet company that does not deal with this country or its quirky banking system.
Me: Any other suggestions?
Bank: change passport
Me: You're having a laugh now, so that's it?
Bank: go to another bank

So after 12 years I'm about to say goodbye to K-bank and their utterly diabolical customer support.

Do keep us informed as to how you 'convert' said cheque into cash.

How confident are you that any other Thai bank will adopt a more 'understanding' approach.

I'm sure that a little 'tea money' will sort things out. :D

In what way have the banks changed their system for cheque processing? And if they've all changed..... you could be Paxo'd.
Yet another bizarre Thai thing maybe. I never used to have any problem depositing cheques at Bangkok Bank but things do change. Can your fickle internet company not use PayPal instead?

T.i.T. I was talking to a couple of UK pensioners (husband & wife)..they intended after many years of visiting Thailand to come & retire here, plus buy either one good condo to rent-out or 2 cheaper ones to make use of their 5 million Baht they were willing to invest here.
The consulate at Hull would not give them a Non 0 visa without proof of funds sat in a Thai bank account, & issued them with Tourist visas...so they came over, (with a fist full of cash) & went to open a Thai bank account..result..?? "Solly, cannot..you both need Non 0 wisa to open bank accout" FFS what is happening nowadays here..???

I too have a middle name on the account and frequently deposit cheques into that account which do not bear my middle name. This is Bangkok Bank.

I would doubt very much that the whole of the Thai banking system has adopted a universal cheque depositing system, in fact I would hazard a guess it is not even bankwide at K-bank

I have opened a couple of accounts at Bangkok Bank without having to show a visa. If you dont like the way a bank is treating you, just try another.

Agree...or even try a different branch of the same bank. They all interpret the rules differently

my husband and I were each granted O visas from Hull by showing sufficient funds in our UK Account, however he wasn't able to open a bank account with Bangkok Bank as they required 2 forms of photo id, and he doesn't have two. I used my UK driving licence to open my account but my husband can't have an account, even though he is the retiree.

I would try to open an account in another branch.
I opened a Kasikorn account in MV branch (5 years ago) and even though I have two middlenames, none of them are on my account.

Fairly certain that they will make a small charge for depositing the amount in BKK (and transferring it to HH) but then withdrawals in HH will be free as normal.
