I'm an insomniac film nut who doesn't go out much at the mo, and another thing is a lot of the stuff I'm posting I already have in AVI format....but the FLV YouTube versions are just as good but half the size, so I'm replacing the bigger files for the smaller ones so I can fit more on my creaking external hard drives.
When it comes to films and history docs I'm a bit of a kleptomaniac. Find it, drop it, store it and watch it later.

Well HHAD chums, if you are a fan of war films, then for you Tommy Atkins Krystmass haz come early.
One of my most beloved films is the epic U boat tale DAS BOOT (the Boat). This German masterpiece sets the standard when it comes to war films, dealing with the issues of war, confinement, disillusionment, and the stress of being a U boatman.....a member of an arm of the service that suffered 75% deaths. Any real film buff or fan of war films will cite this one as one of the best ever made.
Now, Das Boot is a bit of a man for all seasons. You see there are three different versions of it. There is the much slimmed down 1hr40m Theatrical Cut. There is the longer and more in depth nearly 3hr long Directors Cut.
Then there is the legendary Original Cut...... one that was only shown on TV in Germany, Holland and the UK by the then very brave BBC in three parts. This cut is always considered the best, despite being split up it runs in total at well over 4 1/2 hours, and has in it all the deeper characterization and a number of what were considered "controversial" scenes that the shorter cuts had to loose. It also has a narration by one of the characters that was missing from the other cuts, which adds to the background story telling. With this version each character is fully fleshed out, and their pains and stresses become so much clearer.
This was the one I first saw on TV, the one that had me locked in from scene 1....the one I fell deeply and madly in love with. Its only ever been aired twice by the BBC and is a rare as rocking horse dung. Well..... guess what I found:
- Das Boot BBC Uncut version Episode 1 - Episode 2 - Episode 3
In its original German and French with subtitles.... hit the CC button on the player.
I recommend you grab this as soon as possible as the BBC are notorious for hunting stuff down online and getting it taken down. Subs can be found online (no pun intended) or if someone asks I can post a how to tutorial on how to grab the movie and subs files.
Now, Im off to scream ALAAAAAAAAAAAARM!, chuck a bucket of water in my face, and get on with making love to my eyes with this masterpiece.
ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARM!!!!!!
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
wow....what a trip. The Original Uncut version of Das Boot is sooooooo much better.
Anyway..... one of my guilty pleasures as a kid was a love of the TV shows by The Monkees Yes I know they were a 60s version of Bros.... but at least their music didnt suck ass.
I can see why the makers would cut the full version down as even the Directors Cut runs at over 3hrs, but it looses so much when over 1hr of background and characterization scenes were cut out, and I think the narration also adds to the film. With the full version you really do get engaged with the characters, and its easier to understand them. The cuts of the controversial stuff also detract.... the tanker scene is much more horrific with the Brit guys screaming for help than in the shorter cuts where you just see them jump into the burning water, and the aftermath scene is much more effective when you see in the full version that the Captain hates doing what he is ordered to do...leaving them to die. It also makes the horrific ending much more poignant.
will keep my eye out mate.....
"Science flew men to the moon. Religion flew men into buildings."
Gotta say I'm looking forward to this 'Das Boot'. Never seen it but it's not something I can whack on at this time of the night on a weekday after a few beers. Saturday afternoon I will be enjoying (I'm certain) the whole shebang.
Something to look forward to that.
Cheers SM.
Rather than trying to watch a movie of such immense hourage at this time I am happily keeping half an eye on Ghostbusters II. Says it all really....
Its a pleasure mate.... its one of the most intense and powerful war films Ive ever seen. Afterwards look it up on Wikipedia and see how it was filmed....even the way the director filmed it is incredible.
Dont forget - if you are watching it online you need to select the CC button on the bottom of the YouTube player to get the subtitles on.
Anyway....some more links for fans of martial arts flicks from China

To find software or webpages that will download the Closed Captions subtitles as well as the movie file just google "Download CC subtitles from YouTube"
I use some software that does it, (its a small program called Google2SRT) although there are now a couple of web pages where you just put the link in a box and the site sends you an SRT subtitle file it downloads and converts for you.
