Proxy problems

Post by parbeau »

Hi IT-gurus,

I don´t have any True Visions packages so I use to watch football games on special websites that offer free streaming (sports and) TV. A few days ago I noticed it didn´t work anymore (at least on the games and channels I tried). A message came up saying that as I live in Thailand I need a proxy that hides my IP-address, (to go around the licensing problem??). I googled this problem and found loads of free proxy services like this. According to instructions you should access this kind of proxysite, then in a special box enter the desired web address whereby the proxy server acts as an interim, or go-between, hiding my ip-address, making it anonymous, letting me watch the game, TV channel whatever, that originally was blocked. Wow, great I thought, BUT, it doesn´t work! The links I want to go to is unavailable, or I´m directed to stupid scam promotion sites. How does it work? Does anyone know? Maybe I should make changes in my browser under Internet options-Connections-LAN settings - but then (if this is the solution?) I need to find the proxyserversite´s IP-address and the port they´re working under - and how should I find that? Or, is it something with my firewall´s settings?
Very grateful for advice on this matter! Lots of interesting football coming up!
Cheers

The free proxy/VPN thing is crap and slow.......you need to actually buy a VPN to get a decent one that works properly.

This would be a reasonable example of one that's good to use from Thailand, costs about $55 a year and works properly, can watch USA TV programs/UK programs or whatever etc.

Other posters may know more but an OK VPN that you pay a little for works well in my experience. Don't waste your time on the free rubbish as streaming stuff might become an issue.

A free one that I have used with only a few adverts to ignore: expatshield. Works for me but I do not stream so do not know if it will be okay for your needs but its free and easy to try

Check out Identitycloaker. I use it to watch UK tv programmes. About £6.50 per month on a 6 month subscription. The free ones are not up to much - thats why they are free I guess

As others have quite rightly said, the freebies are not up to much. One of the reasons for this is that a fair few simply hide your IP address - they don't actually provide one. This can be problematic in that a number of sites such as BBC iPlayer require a UK IP address - if no address is provided, you're blocked. The ''paid for'' VPN's will provide you with an IP address.

As I wanted a UK IP address (S4C, BBC iPlayer etc.), I use ''My Private Network'', and pay around 5 GBP per month for the privilege - but well worth it in my book, especially as I'm based in China and numerous sites/addresses are blocked - including my bloody company email!! :cuss: :banghead: .

These guys also offer an option for a US VPN, or both UK and US combined.

www.my-private-network.co.uk

I'm told this is worth a try (US VPN), it has a 30 day money back guarantee, so if you don't get on with it, cancel!! Not tried it myself, but a mate in China swears by it.

Best of luck...

Hi All,

We are in Hua Hin with two laptops. Could you use two laptops with one proxy server account? Could you use 2 at the same time?

Also for UK TV does a PS cover iplayer, ITV player and C4 player?

Cheers and thanks for any help.

Most of them allow multiple logins, iplayer and itv player work fine but C4 and C5 have a different system. But they both have youtube channels (only avail in UK), which work fine.

The issue I have with ITV/C4/S4C is that unlike iPlayer you cannot download shows but watch VOD. With the shite bandwidth here in China, it's impossible to watch VOD - iPlayer great though.

I suspect you may find the same problem(s) in Hua Hin with bandwidth.

ITV, BBC some Sky etc are fine. I have never found a way of recording them though. Saying that the programmes are usually available for a week or so on the site

VPSVille takes care of my needs. 400Gb bandwidth a month. Never got even close to exceeding it.
