Agree with you 100% Caller, I think we can blame the Irish immigrants for that. The only thing we did as children in the UK was to try and make a kind of Jack O' Lantern with a pumpkin. It usually ended in tears with someone slicing a finger...

I know I shouldn't, but I get a tad annoyed with my Thai colleagues who've been to America wishing me 'Happy Halloween'. It's something we just don't say in the UK. The only kind of Halloween 'celebrations' I've ever been to were in my teens as it was an excuse for a party (when you're a teenager any excuse will do) and to wear fancy dress.

As for throwing eggs and flour - where the heck did that come from? It has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween.

Here's a bit about the origins, although much more detail can be read in dozens of entries on Google.

Unfortunately us Yanks guilty as charged apparently concerning Halloween in it's current form. Don't blame the kids though, blame the corporate types and advertisers.

My first two kids were raised in the age of parents having to pick through Halloween candy for pins, poison and all manner of bad things. If a wrapper opened or holed, into the trash immediately. It really turned the event sour, so much so neighborhoods organized closed celebrations where the kids only visited trusted houses within 2 blocks of home, and we actually turned the night into a street party. They were fun. :D.

A few little ones here may go out in our neighborhood, probably to return with small bags of chilies and dried squid. Pete

In town a lot of people and bars made some effort and the Hilton had a big halloween party.
I was in the U-Turn playing pool with the wife and some friends and my wife spotted a load of farang kids dressed up trying to trick or treat the bars and girls with not a lot of luck.................do they need a work permit for that :D

Now the best prize for effort would go to El Murphy's bar and staff, we poped in there for a refreshment in the afternoon when they were getting the place ready time we left it looked really good and the best thing was a severd foot hanging down from the front door it made my wife jump and it wasent even dark.

The police made all the bars close at midnight, now that was a shame because it was busy and i was having a good night after being ill for a few days.....makes me think dont they want these bars to do well more tea money after all

Well after spending over 5 hours at Market Village yesterday with two children in fancy dress costume (having taken 2 hours to prepare with make-up etc) all I can say is what a load of rubbish and complete waste of time . The fancy dress/talent competition consisted of 40-odd contestants, at least half of these being small children. Everyone had approx 2 minutes on stage to introduce themselves and show some talent whether it was singing, a dance routine, performing tricks or telling jokes. The majority of them performing extremely well considering there were at least 500 people in the audience.

The rest of the contestants were mainly katoeys, or talentless individuals who had nothing to offer, just appearing in some hideous frock and mask (well I think they were masks) and waving their arms about to some traditional Thai music. Honestly these acts had nothing to do with Halloween whatsoever, just an opportunity to get on stage.

The whole day was carried out in typical Thai fashion, i.e. a lot of hanging about listening to a loud Thai 'rock' band, consisting of a group of teenages thinking they could sing.

The three judges were eventually sent away to compile their votes, and during this time, a magician came on stage who thankfully did a very good job in entertaining the crowd.

The idea was that the judges picked out their favourite 15 contestants and from these had to choose the winners. All of the contestants were called on stage and the chosen 15 were called to step forward. All of the 15 were adults, mainly katoeys, and out of these there were only 2 or 3 who I can honestly say performed ok and deserved to be called. Not one child was picked out, and considering they had all been waiting very patiently for hours until the end of the competition hoping for a chance of receiving one of the monetary prizes (first prize was 10,000 baht, then 7,000 baht, I'm not sure of the rest), there were a lot of very disappointed little faces and quivering bottom lips. Not to mention a lot o p..... off parents.

The whole thing was a complete farce, and even the audience consisting mainly of Thais, couldn't believe the judges' choices. It should have been separated into age groups for a start, at least offering the opportunity for some children to win something. All in all a very disappointing long day, and one which will never be attended by myself or my family ever again.

Lorraine.
