Black Mountain
Black Mountain
I spent a week playing golf at Black Mountain and I have to say i was very impressed with the course and development. I have not seen better greens in Thailand, the bunkers are marvelously sculpted with great sand in it. Tee times are spaced by 10 minutes instead of the 8-9 minutes commonly used. No fivesome allowed... Great food in the club house. good caddies, professional staff.
Am I missing something bad? I have no negatives and am quite keen to purchase a unit there and with the Asian Tour tournament, it seems that the profile of the course will get even better.
I'd love to hear any other comments from locals

Black Mountain is great for Hua Hin, i agree the greens are really pure - and they are doing some great remodelling work on the course - there are maybe some more improvements in the offing - 18 is still a very weak finishing hole in my opinion.
Restaurant is fantastic !
I have sent you a pm with some other information.

Well it would be nicer if 18 was more of a signature hole, It needs a little water I think but if the pin is placed on the right, the green is narrow with bunkers in front and behind, it's not easy. But the greens are truly amazingly nice, best I've seen apart from Blue Canyon. The course needs to mature a bit and have a few more trees. The remodeling of number 11 looks nice. I'd also let the rough grow a bit around the green as it's too easy to chip at the moment. Bunkers are wicked though...
Not the best lay out I've seen but course conditions are second to none... Also a fun course to walk, very pleasant in the early morning or late afternoon and the view from the snack shack at 13 is great

We've played Black Mountain once since they opened and had a great time. It's a beautiful course, similar to what we are used to in California.
If you're thinking of settling there I can only think of two negatives:
1) Black Mountain is pretty far away from town. Especially if you have a Thai spouse it will be a long drive back and forth. My Thai wife won't even consider living at any of the courses in the area because they are all too far from the "market", even Palm Hills.
2) Because we live in Cha Am, right on the beach, we are used to the cooling breezes from the Gulf which keeps our temperatures very moderate. I don't like being hot in the house but we haven't put in air conditioning in our home, and don't intend to.
The two or three times we went to look at Black Mountain and the building around it it seemed pretty warm....a personal call but something to be aware of.
Actually it's a very, very good idea to spend enough time on any intended building site at different times of the day and year to get an idea of temperatures and environment, which can differ substantially depending on location, even within a single development.
Good luck !

well..all good comments....yes the course is in good condition, excellent even....but it is too hilly..too many blind shots and too many' mickey mouse ' holes.. you also need a cart in the hot weather..golf is a walking game which this course does not lend itself too..I think you will all change your opinion about this course when Banyan opens ......
Well the course is a bit of a ways from Cha Am but it's quite close to Hua Hin. It took me less than 15 minutes to get there.
In any case, I have no intention of settling in Thailand, not my thing. A few weeks a year is good enough for me, this would be an investment property with a little use.
As for the course, the hills is what I enjoy which is often what is lacking on thai courses. I thought Palm Hills was one of the most boring courses I have ever played. I find Black Mountain very enjoyable to walk and would never consider a cart. As for the few blind shots, it's a little disconcerting the first time you play it but after a couple of times, it's not an issue. I actually found the course a little bit easy and hope they grow the rough out around the green a bit to make chipping more challenging. The bunkers are fabulous as long as you're not in them;-)
I'm not too hopeful about Banyan although there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm about it. My experience is that they usually build easy resort courses much like Palm Hills.
But there's no accounting for taste about golf courses, to each his/her own

Have to say that i didnt enjoy BM the first few times - but found that going to the back tees (not the very back!) made the course play better - u can also see more. Condition is excellent - no question - but for me its not the best we have here.
Agree Palm Hills is boring! take a trip to play Royal Ratchaburi - now thats a stunning course. In the same area you have Dragon Hills - another stunning layout - wish these courses were 30 mins away from HH!
I think you will get lovely breezes in the hills at BM.

Next time try the new nine at Springfield if you haven't already. Also Lakeview's 36 holes are a favorite of a lot of folks here. They're both more challenging than Palm Hills, and a more difficult walk. We've yet to play Majestic but plan to play there this summer....I've heard a lot of good comments about the course.
We looked at Banyan a few weeks ago and it will certainly be pretty, if nothing else. They've delayed their opening until November but I'm sure most of us locals are itching to get on it.

Per their website 3,000 all seven days but you had better check with the course directly or whoever you book with.
Google here: (http://www.tourismhuahin.com/golf-festival-huahin.php) for all the current info on the summer discounts.

Last month was 1000 Baht for the round including driving range balls. I understand that this month will be 800Baht but will go back to 3000Baht after the low season and I was told they'd crank up the fees at least another 1000 after the Asian Tour tournament in March.
As for memberships, it seems that the only way to get one at the moment is to buy a property on the course.

A number of friends have played Banyan already - all have really enjoyed and heaped it with praise. Look like being a belter! Courses
What needs to happen is a little competition re pricing - golf has become expensive over the last few years - its no longer cheap to come here and pay green fees - with the ever increasing costs of flights etc- Hua Hin has got to give some incentives to get the number of tourists up.

I'd agree, JW.
Would love to have a go at Black Mountain - that and Banyan are the only two courses I've not tried around here, including the ones further out that you mentioned earlier on this thread.
For a "poor old resident" like me, 3,000 a round (getting on for 50 quid) is just not justifiable. OK, maybe once for a special occasion.
At 1,000 - 2,000 I'd give it a go. I appreciate that it's a great course, but if I can play good private ones in the UK, with a member, for 10-30 pounds a round, I might be put off coming over here to golf.

Once you go Asian you will never go Caucasian !!
bozzman,
Agreed. Used to play it regularly when it was 9 holes, but only once as an 18. Good value.
And further afield, there's a military course at Ao Manao - Prachuab (9 holes). Think it was 100 to play. We only went round once (too hot), but I think the green fee was for two rounds. No caddies (unless you want). Trolleys available.
OK, not millionaires' golf, but acceptable and a long course with loads of water.
EDIT: just noticed that the thread comes under "Property". So,
as per the OP.
