Football World Cup 2010
Time to start the speculation. Wonderlust, previously you have blamed the managers for the non-success of the England team. See what an ex-Hampster has to say about the team.

BG,
A bit early to start this topic, and this one will probably run and run! I agree with Sir Trev, and England does need to be more realistic, both the fans and the FA. I have much more faith in Capello than either of his immediate predecessors, but as Brooking says he needs to have a squad that can cope with injuries, rather than if one or two talismanic players get injured the whole thing falls apart. The positions i am most concerned about are both full back positions and the forwards, as I see that at the moment we do not have enough quality as back up to the incumbents. Right back is particularly worrying, and I am beginning to think that our best bet there is Owen Hargreaves, although it would be a waste of his other abilities, but there are several quality players vying for the midfield slots and he is far better than Wes Brown, who shouldn't be near the squad. Left back is a worry for me because I don't rate Cashley Cole that much and his understudy Bridge rarely gets first team action at club level; I hope Capello tries a few of the promising youngsters out for that position before it is too late.
Up front we do have some quality but the strikers we have don't seem to gel and a front two of Owen and Rooney I think is too small; one of them with a good target man would be better, but that is the position we seem to be slightly lacking in; I hope that Dean Ashton can become the player that he promises to be, and there is Peter Crouch but at present there are not many other realistic candidates that I can think of - most of the English strikers seem to be of the small and quick variety; if Capello can devise a system that works with two small quick strikers then we may be OK but you normally need a 'presence' up front to give the defence a hard time.
I'll be interested to read what others think.

Well the shining example of how to behave, John Terry, has been named England Captain.

World Cup 2010
I read a while ago that South Africa were struggling to be ready to cope with the tournament and that 3 other, unspecified, counties were in line to take over should the worst happen. Maybe one country would be England which would increase our chances as home nation!
p.s. I was there at Wembley in 1966. Magic atmosphere.

1966
Ah yes
Watched it in a pub in Trafalgar square with a bunch of Germans and we all ended up in the fountains together kissing any police woman in sight
Then we all ended up in Charing Cross hospital with hypothermia
No wonder my body has given up on me

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

Its the strikers that most concern me.
Rooney and Owen just dont gel together.Besides Owen is injured more often than not and, recently,Rooney has looked a shadow of the player he was a year or two back.
Crouch is OK coming on for the last 20 minutes just to shake things up but I dont see him as a regular 90 minute player.
Defoe and Bent dont appear to be International quality.
Possibly Dean Ashton,if he can keep free from injury, could have a role to play.
I hate to say this but the most effective forward we had when we beat both Israel and Russia 3-0 was Emile Heskey.....cant imagine saying that in his Liverpool or Birmingham City days !

Good start for England in the 2010 world cup with John Terry being announced as England's new captain.
Personally I think it will be a good choice in the long run for the team. With his 100% effort, respect he has amongst the players and supporters, and his never say die attitude to win every game he plays in, should form a good base to starting the team in the coming qualification rounds.

WL Just to show you I was not lying here is the article where Cappello says basically those word (Just in case you thought I was trying to wind you up again)
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... 580068.ece
At least Rio got the runners up job anyway, so you all should be a little bit grateful to Capello that he did not get overlooked completely

This what was I was on about it was in the article
"Perhaps there should have been a clue to Capello’s thinking that he has never changed captains whenever he has taken over a new team throughout his career.
The Italian insisted he did not make his decision until the start of this week. And until he made his announcement to the players, no one knew but him.
He highlighted Terry’s “big personality” as the clincher.
Capello said: “It’s not an easy choice because Rio Ferdinand is a very important player and I like him as a captain. But I chose John because we need one captain with a big personality in every moment"
