Thai customs clearance

Post by Arcadian »

Has anyone any experience of bringing in a 20 foot container of furniture and personal effects? How easy or difficult is it to clear through Thai customs and how much would I expect to pay for duty and delivery from Bangkok to HH. Thanks in advance.

It is really fairly easy to bring in container of your belongings. We were charged $750 duty last year - please do not ask me why we had to pay in dollars as we did not get a proper answer to that.

Once the shipping agent in Bangkok is notified that your container is about the arrive they will require your passport - a photocopy will not suffice and your passport will not be returned until you belongings are delivered to you. Just in case someone else wishes to see it!

The only problem we had was the container arrived during a long bank holiday weekend and so we were charged for storage in the port as the Customs Office was shut for 5 days.

I must add that customs duty does seem to vary as some people we know were not charged anything whilst others have had to pay more but I think the amount we were charged is around the norm.

Very few of our boxes we opened and inspected but again that is the luck of the draw.

Good luck

The reply from Moja is correct, all duties vary on each individual case.
Assuming your from UK or any other country will be the same......USE a known professional company, more important GET Door To Door !!!!!!
They will need to know if your container can get to outside your home..
Also Items must be 6 months old !!!! Keep Receipts for these items handy.
Best of Luck

If you are coming from the UK do not use Robinsons of Oxford we had nothing but trouble (broken and lost items)with them, although their head office is in Oxford they have branches throughout the country so beware.

As already stated your belongings should be over 6 months old and for certain items like TVs, computers, DVD player etc you are only supposed to bring one of each in.
