Hi Carol,

I know you asked for the nearest, but slightly further away is Koh Tao, a beautiful island with good snorkelling. Bit more than a weekend trip, 3-4 days minimum really. Great sunsets, BBQ set-ups on the beach etc etc
There's a bit here about it.

I haven't been to Bang Saphan yet but will try to soon.
Buksida would you say the underwater life and water quality etc is a lot better in Koh Tao than Koh Talu in Bang Saphan ?

For diving I would say Koh Tao, plenty of different dive sites with lots to see and good depths - the only problem being it gets very crowded.

For snorkeling or free diving I'd rate Koh Talu, make sure you charter a boat and go to the two smaller islands (Koh Sing and Sang) where the rest of the tourists don't go. The coral is cleaner and more pristine there, I posted this a few months ago the last time I dived there:

Will be doing it again this weekend hopefully so will post the report.

Thanks, I was reading the 'boat trip' page on the Bang Saphan site, which is here for anyone who's interested:

The beach down there gets a bit crowded though by the look of it: http://www.bangsaphanguide.com/img/gallery/rs02-l.jpg

I'll probably bump into you down there one weekend soon.

No EAN in Bangsaphan, you're lucky to get regular fills and the only dive shop there is shut half the time!

Chumphon maybe better but I haven't been for a while so don't know the current status.

It will take between 1 1/2 to 2 hours by car from Hua Hin to Bang Saphan and about 30 mins boat ride to Koh Talu.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.
