roccia

Post by russ »

Went to this restaurant with 19 ladies on Thursday night, what a disappointment, we waited 1 hour and 45 minutes for our food and when it came several of us had the wrong order, in my case I had ordered clams in white wine sauce but was given clams in spicy tomato sauce.and if the clams had been any smaller I would have had to have a microscope to see them. This dish although priced at 380 baht did not come with any vegtables or salad, which had to be ordered seperatley at extra cost. Those of us who had ordered pasta dishes found that the pasta was not home made but from a packet, it was over cooked and over salted. For a so called Italian restaurant this was unacceptable. If you have been thinking of trying Roccia my advise is save your money and go some were else.

I can't comment on the quality of the food however I do know that it is almost impossible for a kitchen to cook a meal seperately for 20 people within a reasonable time.
Remember that there was probably other tables wanting their meals cooked too.
For big groups we always strongly recommend a Banquet. This makes life easy for everyone.

Post by russ »

cant agree with that we have taken 15 to 20 people to other places in hua hin like coco 51 and the rock and both been busy but no problam with service or food if roccia cant handle big numbers they should not take bookings also you think ok to wait 1 1/2 hours for your main course i dont think so

Been to Roccia 3 times and have had good food every time, starters were fantastic. Service not particularly fast but no complaints about the food.

All restaurants have "off nights" new staff often the cause.

The roof terrace is great, nice and breezy.

I would also say that with 19 peopl the odds on getting all of the food correct are pretty slim!

Happy eating all.

Big Group

Post by huahindolly »

I was part of the big group @ Roccia, too. My dinner was good (though they served me mashed potatoes AND a baked potato - yuuuck), but the service was abominable.

The organizer had asked Roccia if they preferred to do it fixed-menu, banquet-style, but they declined.

There were two other tables of six on the terrace, and they arrived after us and got served and out in good time.

And when it came time for check bin, that took another half an hour because their tally was 75 baht off. Come on!

There are IMHO many other good choices in Hua Hin, so I won't waste my time going back to Roccia until I hear good reports.

russ,
Whether you agree or not is beside the point. Apparently the restaurant decided agains't a set menu. They will learn.
Picture inside the kitchen.
We have two cooks. One doing stir fry, one doing curries and various other helpers.
I believe on your night there was two other tables of six.
It would be normal of the kitchen to try and get the two smaller tables out of the way the concentrate on the big one.
It is panic stations if out of the 20, 15 order different stir fry's. It does happen and it is impossible for one person to cook 15 different dishes in a short time.
Do yourself a favour and even if the telephonist says they dont want a set menu, put yourself in the position of the kitchen staff and insist on it.
I am not trying to defend this establishment but please EVERYONE dont be too hard on them. They are only human.

Surely you could have just given it to one of your mates!

The restaurant business is one of the hardest out there, i think that everyone is being very harsh - it seems to be the order of Hua Hin grumps to have a go at restaurants! I will go to roccia again, and hopefully get great food again.

Sorry JW - can't agree. Yes the restaurant business is tough, but I think the western restaurants I've tried in Hua Hin are very complacent and need to improve drastically. On saying that, I've never been to Roccia and nothing on this thread has put me off trying it.

Personal Faves

Post by huahindolly »

OK, Jockey, I'll bite.

Below are my *personal* favorite restaurants in Hua Hin, though like Wanderlust said in the crinkle cuts thread, food preferences are a very personal thing. When I rate a restaurant, I consider not only the cuisine but the ambiance, the service and the price. I'm not a big meat eater, veggies are my favorites. To a point, price isn't a huge factor in my choice. So in no particular order, here are my favorites after nearly four years back & forth - now permanently - in Hua Hin.

Rajamangala University (near Khao Tao) - decent student food, all dishes are 20 B
Mini Farm Kitchen, Soi 88 - consistent, clean, good service and moderate price.
Porn's restaurant - up Soi 88 just part Markwin Lodge and new bakery - average food, cheap prices, really nice owners (took care of a snake problem and a late-night water emergency in addition to serving dinner)
Corner 84 - great Western dining experience, professional staff
White Lotus - good noveauChine cuisine, terrific service and view
Cool Relax - cool, relaxing, slow but friendly service, good value
Pan-de-Wan (not quite the correct the name, just N. of the flyover near about Soi 102) - cheap, good service, consistent
Orchid Restaurant - on waterfront street, good Western food, good service

Places I'd like to try - any feedback?
Dune - sounds like a really cool setting
The Rock - ditto
Baan E-san - we tried to go to lunch but only open for dinner?
Putharacsa - great appetizer, is the restaurant their equal?

Bon appetit!

75 Baht

Is 75 Baht really worth 20 peoples time to wait an additional 25 minutes.

75 baht

Post by huahindolly »

Well, we didn't think so. They were in the back fussing over the bill for a heck of a long time, and when one of our group asked why it was taking so long, that was their response - the sum of the bills was off by 75 baht. Good grief, we would've gladly paid it!

I think that this is a very good post Ozuncle. It might be worth everybody's while putting themselves in the shoes of the owner/manager/kitchen staff once in a while. We all have off days & I sure wouldn't fancy cooking 20 individual meals (& whoever else was in the restaurant) just because the girl/boy on the phone had agreed to it. And let's face it, TIT. Virtually anything can & may be agreed to; whether sincere or not.
