In answer to clean toilets
Even if I say it my self The Buffalo Tavern has spotlessly clean toilets, great food, beer 50 Baht a glass, 70 Baht a bottle plus cheap branded spirits. Vodka and Gin with a lemon slice all the sports, 70’s and 80’s music and when asked for A/C.
As opposed to;
Soi Bintabaht, dirty plastic chairs expensive watered down cheap brand spirits 90 Baht a bottled beer hello hansom man ear busting music stinking infected rat infested toilets old men with young girls that know no better uuuhg!!!!!
Can any one person let me know of any decent lively bars in town that do not have any of the last section of the above that you can take your European wife?
Excluding;
Jonny Walkers.
Buffalo Tavern.
Mai Thai.
Lounge bar Hilton Hotel.
Elephant bar Sofitel.
We, as in my wife and I have lived here for the past 12 years and in that time apart from the pub/bars mentioned above there has never been anywhere for ex-pats with there European wives to hangout.
Where else is there?

I never use Binter during the high season
A couple you might want to try are Marinas on poonsuk, Sara Janes (a restuarant not a bar) on poonsuk and Lord nelsons down Salakam. Not noisy, comfortable seating and no pushy girls in your face. Know all the bosses well and they are very attentive. As you are of course

BaaBaa I have to agree with you, my 1st visit to HH I had my farang GF with me and had no problems at all. At the time I was drinking in the London (before it changed hands).
I used to go and drink at nights in there after my GF went to bed, but also took her in there a few times during they day and earlier evenings. At all times she was made welcome and never had any problems with anyone there. Done the same thing all over LOS where I have been and had no problem at all.
Bill in answer to your request, must say would highly recommend the Monsoon Bar (not far from you, but cannot remember the name of the street) it does Thai/Vietnamese food and also a mean steak, Lets Sea (halfway down the beach towards Koh Takiab), also the pub on the RH Side in Koh Takiab (not sure of the name). I think they would all be suitable

I do understand what Bill means about somewhere to take a farang wife, but hey Bill - why not have a busmans holiday now and then and take her for a nice meal? Personally I would never object to being escorted to anything to do with music in the sofitel!
Just one point though - maybe its me - but why do some women expats seem to have a problem with going out either on their own or with other women expats?
I know there have been, maybe still are, the womens group gatherings, but with respect to the organisers that has always seemed to me to be a contrived way to meet people. (Not just in HH but anywhere.)
Some of us dare I say 'ladies' used to have a great time at the darts nights, which have never been exclusively female.
The point is I think that expat women can feel much more comfortable going into a bar on their own in HH than they would at home, especially when they will have had time to get to know the farang bar owners anyway. I spent many happy hours chewing the cud with the likes of Tim at AN, Dave at Cheers, Dougie, Kurtz, Peter, Barrie and all. Some now moved on I know but expat men can be good mates.

I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that there is now a ladies team in the darts league! And we're not half bad!
Being a single lady, I have never had a problem walking into bars on my own. You have your favourites and can walk in there anytime and know someone there. It's more of a community here than at home I find.

Hi ADW, well
it's good to hear that there are enough women now to justify a womens team, although I think I'd probably still prefer the mixed ones!
But at least I'm not on my own with the 'bar' thing. Any expat female must surely realise that in HH, or anywhere in Thailand, they will be greatly outnumbered by expat males, so if you want any kind of social life you can't be too fussy.
Mind you - what this has got to do with clean toilets beats me! Did Bill start this as another promo? (Sorry Bill)

In the spirit of a hot Saturday morning and fun, I reckon this chap could do a good job in HH:
Mr "Happy Toilet" Wan
The Public Health Ministry Friday appointed Wan Yoobamrung "Mr Happy Toilet" to promote a campaign for clean public toilets.
"I dreamt when I was a child that if I ever worked here at the Public Health Ministry I would make all the toilets in the country flush toilets," Wan says.

Margaret,
Not an advert promo at all ‘‘promise’’, I just saw on another thread about clean toilets, looked for it again but couldn’t find it and just thought I would start a new one.
As I said, my wife and I have lived here for many years but it seems of late that HH is closing in, the place is getting bigger but not better (as in entertainment wise). Apart from the big hotels, there are no comfortable bars/pubs to frequent and when I say comfortable I mean like wine bars or real gathering places. I don’t mean sweaty little places that are all the same with a bar down one side and uncomfortable low seating opposite serving watered down cheap gin with cheap tonic, no lemon or lime, served in a crappy little glass that is gone in two gulps so as to serve you more.
People in the past have said that my place is a ‘tourist trap’, well I beg to differ. I believe that many people on holiday as well as most ex-pats prefer a bit of comfort. The bars in Soi Bintabart have more tourists than ex-pats, but they are not the type of tourists that would frequent the Buffalo Tavern and aren’t bothered about quality most have something else on there minds.
My wife goes out occasionally (once or twice a month) with her friends, European and Asian, they are all dressed up with nowhere to go apart from the major hotels but if she has an evening out in Bangkok she says ‘spoilt for choice’. Don’t get me wrong, they do go into the local bars but there is just no comparison, just used to better things I suppose.
I’m not saying that the local people aren’t friendly, most are, but now and again it would be nice to dress nicely and visit somewhere a little more up-market with more atmosphere without mosquitoes attacking the ankles every second.
When you read these forums it seems most people are just after cheap, cheaper, and cheapest.
Why oh why does everyone gripe on about the price of things and want to know where the cheapest breakfast/noodles/etc can be bought. Do they not realize they pay for what they get and also that most people don’t mind spending more for a better ambience and surroundings.
I posted this thread by accident really and now it has gone on to something else. Never mind let’s see what response I get from this, or can we not start a live friendly discussion? Of course at my place and I will buy the first round; it would be a good way to meet!!

Could not disagree with you if I tried Bill .I spent my first few business years in Thailand dealing with mainly backpackers .You expect them to be tight because the lonely planet rules and cannot be questioned (even if 6 years out of date !)
But please put things into perspective guys .I could take 4 people to Bills or any other equivlent establishment in town for dinner & drinks at less than the cost of a round of golf ( for 1 person) between us all .
