I can't beleive it's been 10 years since Princess Dianas death, it seems like just yesterday. She was an amazing woman and we miss her dearly.

I remember hearing the news on Thai tv 10 years ago. To me, it seems like an eternity ago.

I preface this post by saying that I love all things English and admire the Queen and royal family tremendously. Have visited there many times and traveled from Wales to London to Scotland (once on bicycle in fact).. I am what is sometimes called an Anglophile in America. ( Have to tell you someday about my 20 year stint in the British Army)

Anyway, I am sorry Diana died and all, but I must confess that I never liked her from the very start. Thought the wedding was a huge mistake and it went downhill from there. I never felt that she was genuine, even in the good things that she did and that it was all for publicity. That, and the playing around did it for me I'm afraid. Probably in the minority on this one.

not quite chas,
wasn't that keen on her either.i don't believe she was quite the perfect princess she seemed to portray herself as.
her 2 sons live the high & mighty pampered lifestyle, yet scream about invasion of privacy when they are snapped staggering out of a nightclub at 5 am.
i am a bit of an anti royalist so maybe my opinions are a little biased.
the queen? ok, the rest are just hangers on, sapping the state of money which could be better spent elsewhere.
no offence guys, just my personal opinion :)

No Chas, you are not alone, after she did the Bashir thing, it was pretty obvious to lots that she was more than a victim with large simpering eyes. Public opinion became and remains divided.

I was never her biggest fan. But my opinion of her changed for the better in the last few years of her life. Not because of her highly publicised problems - I never felt sorry for her. And yes, it seemed that she was manipulating public opinion.

But do you know what Diana had that her husband & Camilla never had? Charisma. And towards the end of her life she used that charisma to help others. She publicised the fight against landmines & got governments to change their policies. She hugged AIDS patients and showed that it was OK to do that.
I, for one, don't care what her motivation for that altruism was - whether it was sincerely meant or whether part (or most) of it was to sway public opinion in her favour. Bottom line - she saved lives & helped a lot of charities with her patronage. That is something worth remembering her for.

Dawn, my sentiments exactly. At least she put herself out there. People in the public eye will always get critisized for one thing or another usually for the worst things. She very well could have hidden behind walls and done nothing for anyone else, yet she got off her ass and at least tried, which is more than most of us do in a lifetime.....

Hello There Y'all

I share the Sentiments of Mrs. Dawn Diana had a lot of Charisma which was unrivled. She gave somethiing that was still mportant which was hope To the poor, to the HIV infected, and to those who are in need. I think that should be well remembered as Diana has passed away ten years ago.

When I was in Amerca last year. I watched "The Tonight show with Jay Leno" on Televison. There he had his 10 to 12 Min. of Monologue Jokes and in one Joke He was talking about Prince Charles which reads like this.

"Well In Great Brittain Prince Charles is openly endorsing programs against Glöbal Warming. Well isn't that amazing!!! This comes from a Prince who thinks Camilla looks Hot.... (laughter all over the Studio!)"

charisma

Have to agree Dawn and Sally that she DID do quite a bit of good despite what I still feel were ulterior motives. And she did have tons of charisma. Saw a bit of a retrospective on TV last night. Still cant say I warmed to her at all though and poor Charles, who had a hard enough time of it even before she came along has my sympathy.

I was also reminded again that Diana's brother ( Lord Spencer is it? ) is just a total idiot. I like Camilla. No she is not pretty but she looks to be a very kind, loving and honest woman.

Yes, Diana did highlight some problems in the world as it is today, and did a pretty good job. But, I was never a great fan of hers. I did feel sorry for her, but she made her choices and I think that she knew what the set-up was from day one.

What really niggles me is the very public outpouring of grief for someone that most people never knew personally, and (obviously) never met. I can't really feel that kind of affection for someone I didn't personally know. Family and best friends, yes. Even then, emotions are not on public display. The florists were rubbing their hands with glee - and now they have to wait for the next one...

I'm a Royalist. but I do agree with Redzonerocker that there are, maybe, just too many hangers on.

& i totally agree with you too vital spark, how can people openly show so much grief for someone they have never met or known on a personal level?
i also agree with the comments about the work she did with various charities, but there are a lots of people that help with charitable causes, famous & not so famous.
she just got the publicity because of who she was.
i think there was a lot more to the life of diana that we don't know about & may never know.

That was the whole point, rzr. The charities got publicity because of who she was. You can't buy that sort of public recognition & it helped them enormously. Being helped by Josephine Bloggs of Chepstow rather than Princess Diana just wouldn't have got the charities the recognition & the airtime. To get your name/cause out there is far more valuable, and whatever you think of her, she gave them that.

I went to Disneyland last week and was surprised, although not too disappointed, that Princess Diana (whoever she is - don't remember any of her films) was not available for photo opportunities like Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and some of the other cartoon characters.
