Nanys farang food prices

Post by 404cameljockey »

I don't know if the demise of AP Interfoods has led them to take advantage of the shrinkage in farang food outlets (which we know aren't cheap anyway), but tins of Heinz soups are now almost 170 Baht, and their sausage rolls which late last year were 3 for 99 Baht are now 2 for 100 Baht (Cumberland sausage rolls 2 for 120 Baht!). Maybe I just hit on two lines that are now very highly priced, but I'm going back to making my own again (my sausage rolls are superlative, and I'll try my hand at soups).

Their pies are still the best in Hua Hin for me as they're very good and still reasonably priced.

I think prices are going up across the board all over. I was staggered at how much I had to pay for heinz malt vinegar recently in both Makro and VM - VM were 20 baht cheaper, and also noticed soup and other prices on the up. At Nany's I noticed tea bags had increased in price on what I assumed was new stock, although I thought the price of sausage rolls was good. I enjoyed mine in any case, are they from HHH&B?

Not at 100฿ for 2 - far too cheap.

but tins of Heinz soups are now almost 170 Baht,
£3.90 for a tin of soup 😆

Honestly, if you're paying that in Thailand, with all the food Thailand has to offer, you're a bit daft.
I don't trust children. They're here to replace us.

if you search on Lazada for heinz soup

then sort by low to high

you can get them for 96-119 baht, expiry late this year.

Nanys always baked their own but some time last year they said they couldn't get the flaky pastry any more.

The pork sausage rolls now look bought in; thin and a bit anaemic. The Cumberland look better. I bought a couple to tide me over until I start baking again.

That's a good suggestion. Those prices are where AP Interfoods were a couple of years ago.

Well, I was happy with them, but I'll give the Cumberland a go next time.

If you know how good the basic pork sausage roll was before it's hard to be happy with the current offering. But the price is too high anyway now for locally made produce.

I know my idea of a good sausage differs from some. I also enjoy a good sausage roll. When I travel to watch footie I usually take sufficient sausage rolls with me instead of sampling local foods. We rarely have less than a dozen sausage rolls in our freezer.

I used to detest the sausage rolls that Nany's used to sell. However, after reading the above reports of the new offering at Nany's I bought a couple for my lunch yesterday. OK, not a lot of sausage compared to rivals, but I thought the pastry was very good, and there was a very pleasant taste. IMHO a vast improvement (for my tastebuds). I'd rate the new Nany's sausage roll as 'nice'.

I'm more fussy about pork pies than I am about sausage rolls. I'm happy with buying frozen Greggs sausage rolls, which Nany's also sell.

So am I. But I have no idea about price, sorry. Just seen them in the freezer section at Nany's, the ones against the wall, to your left as you enter. They have been available for a few years now from VM, we had a whole thread about it when they started stocking food from Iceland. I currently have two Greggs steak bakes in my freezer.

Having been impressed by last week's sausage roll offering, I thought I'd try the Cumberland version this week. Although slightly dearer, they must be 50% larger. Very nice pastry, but the sausage, despite being very pleasant, does lack the bacon flavour that I associate with Cumberland. Enjoyable though.
