Mobile roadblocks against traffic violators scrapped nationwide

After having received numerous complaints from members of the public, the National Police Office has decided to stop the practice of police setting up of mobile roadblocks to catch traffic violators.
Police spokesman Pol Lt-Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said Thursday that the police order took immediate effect as of Thursday and would be applied throughout the country.

From now on, he said that if a roadblock is to be set up, it has to be manned by a police inspector and there must be a clearly visible sign to show the existence of the roadblock. Also, their superiors must be informed about the whereabouts of the roadblocks and what kind of roadblocks they are.

Pol Lt-Gen Prawut told members of the public who happen to come across a mobile roadblock to take pictures or to VDO record it and have it sent to the police spokesman’s office or to dial 1197 to lodge a complaint.

He warned that any police officers found to have set up roadblocks without authorization would face punishment.

I posted about this on another thread yesterday and we got stopped at a roadblock about five hours later out towards Hin Lek Fai. There were cones so I suppose it was signed and there was a senior looking guy who could possibly have been an inspector, otherwise no change.

glad to hear they may cut back on this BS (i will believe it when I see it) because I have never experienced this in my country. Makes me nervous.

if you think you are being ripped off, out comes the video if you are brave.
maybe do a u turn and shoot from across the street, or from up high somewhere.

if you are at fault, and the fine is reasonable, be happy there is no record of your infraction, no REAL ID check with radios and computers, sometimes (never for me so far) no check of registration or insurance and no problems with insurance companies raising your rate and you are free to go for very little money.

Maybe just stop the white people only road blocks. that would be nice.

Everywhere pick-up trucks seem to still be on top of the hit list and always have been. They do find illegal goods and drugs using that practice, but the odd farang out for pleasure also gets inconvenienced in the process. They are usually cowards to stop expensive looking rides for fear someone with clout is in there and will rip them a new $#@hole, but any smuggler with smarts will now use a good looking vehicle IMO. If we see a change in these practices, and equal treatment across the board, then things indeed are looking up and perhaps the GIC* is making some significant impact. * General in charge. Pete

Yes, I think the type of roadblock (scam) they are trying to eliminate is the one where you find 2 BIB jumping out in front of traffic in the middle of the night, supplementing their wages on their way to work before starting their routine shift.

I don't think we'll see any cessation of the major roadblocks. I honestly don't see the problem with these - usually 2 minutes and you're through anyway. As Pete says, they do find illegal goods, so they work.

I think most of the seriously illegal stuff gets missed in all those vehicles that you see doing u-turns just before the checkpoints whilst the police are preoccupied trying to hassle 200 bt for minor infringements.

Probably, but any professional bad guy is going to know where these road blocks are anyway, and route around them. Obviously the bad guys aren't too clever because they seem to catch people most days just South of Hua Hin.

Maybe people should start reporting them as the good Pol Lt-Gen says. I think they often go on the premise that nobody is going to complain!

maybe the tourist police should make sure the checkpoints meet with the new guidelines.
