The transport of seven giant statues of famed Thai kings from the central provinces to a new park in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan began Thursday and motorists are being advised to avoid Rama II, Phetkasem and Cha-am-Pran Buri roads over the next week.
The army stated that motorcades, 100-200 metres long, were scheduled to roll from July 23-29, travelling from a single casting plant each day to the park. Transport was set to begin at 3pm with the statues reaching the park in Hua Hin by 3am.
Roads will be closed when the motorcades carrying parts of the statues passing because each statue is 13.9 metres tall and its base is six metres wide.
The transport was set from Nakhon Pathom province on July 23, from Lop Buri on July 24, Ayutthaya on July 25, Pathum Thani on July 26 and 27, from Bangkok on July 28 and Ayutthaya again on July 29.
The army is building a grand park named Ratchapakdi in Hua Hin to honour past Thai monarchs. The park is intended to demonstrate people's loyalty to the royal institution and is located on 222 rai in an army compound near the Klai Kangwon Palace.
The 700-million-baht park will also function as a venue for important ceremonies, tourist attraction and place for public education on Thai history.
To be erected in the compound are statues of seven former famed kings: King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, King Naresuan the Great, King Narai the Great, King Taksin the Great, King Buddha Yodfa Chulalok the Great, King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn.
A 91-rai yard is designated for important ceremonies, a museum and exhibition centre under the kings' statues to display the profiles and contributions of all former monarchs.

Thanks for that Pete.
I'm travelling down from Bangkok tomorrow afternoon - I think I'll avoid Petchkasem and take the coast road after Samut Songkram...........

How the hell are they going to transport items of the dimensions shown on the road? I suppose that they will be laid down flat, but with the width quoted it will be fun to watch!
I wonder if anybody looked at transporting them on a barge? I guess not, it would be too logical!

I see those petroleum cracker units transported over here on Rt 36 from time to time. They're probably around 50' long and take up most of two traffic lanes wide. They uses these chassis with about 40 small wheels/tires spaced the length of the chassis just about. So, it appears there are loaders and drivers about who know how to transport something like that. Lets hope they use them, and the correct gear. Pete

Seeing as those Bangkok Hiso's own most of Hua Hin, I'd doubt that you'll ever get a break from them.good. does this mean there will be not Bangkok HISO in HH this week?

I'm on my way back to HH on the airport bus and have just passed two trucks with the statues on. One big traffic snarl for 5/6 km as the bus passed them single file. They were just north of Petchaburi around 8pm when we finally passed them.

Just back from Bkk and passed 2 of them, they were in pieces, one piece on each lorry, but had stopped by the side of the road about 20 minutes before Cha Am. No hold ups for us, we left Bkk about 5 pm and reached Cha am about 8.30.

Thank you for such a helpful answer

Google goes on about the song The Heat Is On by Glen Frey and I don't see how that applies!
