Long train

Post by Nereus »

On a trip to Australia last year I made a road journey in western NSW, about a couple of hundred miles inland from Sydney. I stopped to take a photo of the cathedral, and to do so hobbled up a set of stairs onto a footbridge across a railway line.

Just as I took the photo I heard a train coming around the bend in the line. It passed directly underneath me, and the noise and heat from the 3 engines was incredible. I do not know just how long it was, but if you look closely the engines are just about at the horizon on a bend near the top of the photo, while the last of it is still passing under me.

Just why this type of freight was out on a line in the middle of a rural area I have no idea. The video is of a similar train in the state of Victoria, not the train in the photos.

Funny story now but not at the time. My wife and I were on our honeymoon and anxiously traveling south to Florida. We were up at the crack of dawn really excited having packed the car the day before our wedding when we were halted at a train crossing a few hours into our trip. The crossing bars had come down just as we approached and I thought, okay time to freshen up the coffee. 45 minutes later the caboose came by. Needless to say we were both really ticked off and later we did a little research to find out that the train far exceeded the limited length. I calculated the length to be approximately 6000 meters. Moral of the story is they are as long as they can get away with being.

Love is a long time commitment. Is that the moral of the story!

LMAO  yea right. The moral of the story was long term ... about 3 years until she decided to bed down with her new boss. Well at least she waited until after I put her through graduate school, there is that. Hmm, maybe that train was an omen?

They must have 1 or 2 pusher engines in the back.

There are quite a few Canadian Pacific Railways videos on YouTube and yes there is a pusher towards the rear.
