VHS to DVD

Post by tuktukmike »

Here is a question for some of you teccies.

I have a large collection of VHS videos, ie the complete collection of South Park, some men behaving badly and many others.

I bought 2 new VHS players with me when we moved out here but can i at some time have them put onto DVD.

Also i brought some DJ decks with me and got the amps and speakers out here, i have also a Soundlab mixer.

Problem is i am getting electric Buzz, can i buy some sort of resistor out here to stop this or has anyone got any ideas.

Hi Mike.
yes you can copy from VHS, through an (ADC) analog/digital signal converter and then download it to your pc for burning cd's.

The electric buzz is most probably a grounding error.
Check your grounding cables all the way from your grounding conductor or plug, then the plugs.

Hi Norseman,

Thanks for the reply.

And here lies the problem.

Most plugs here have no earth.

Even in my house we have the 3 way type with earth, one problem.

There is no earth cable attached to the rear of the socket.

As for VHS to DVD.

I bought new hardware for my computer in BKK so i could convert my 12in vinyl to CD, buksida knows the thing i bought and was thinking maybe it will do this also.

But a VHS video would take a hell of a time to download i think, can you not take them to a shop to be done.?????

Norseman is pretty close on the conversion thing. Personally I wouldnt bother as you can download pretty much everything on bittorrent - I have amost 200 Gigs of comedy.

To ground your house (I have only done it with my "office"), buy a metre long copper rod (theres a hardware store just opposite your soi and down a bit that sells them), several metres of multicore flex cable (5mm should do it). Aquire a large hammer and a drill.

The rod will have a bolt attachment at the end of it, this is where the cable is soldered/welded onto. Then hammer the bastard into the ground until you can see it no more! Run the cable into the house and solder it to the earth terminal on all the 3 pin sockets you want grounded ... and thats it!

Also prevents annoying shocks from your monitor, buzzes in your sound system and, stabilizes your internet connection.

As for the earth problem.
Are you sure you don't measure 110V between phase and earth?
I'm pretty sure your laundrymaschine is grounded. Otherwise it's dangerous to use. If you have no grounding cable, you should have a talk with an electrician and let him install one. You don't need ground for all your electrical appliances, but audio equipment, dishwashers, shower heaters, electric cookers and microwave heaters should have earth cables connected.

As for the VHS part; if your computer is equipped with a proper soundcard, you'll have the sound fixed. If you also have a tv inlet, and your VCR is equipped with the right outlet then maybe it will work.
Are you able to watch VCR's on your computer?
You might have a S-video inlet?

Very eloquently put Buksi
Mike
The buzz also could and more likely be from dirty connections on phono plugs on your input leads, damaged leads ,jack / phono plugs or dry solder joints which is a common problem on this kind of equipment , many sound systems the earth can be lifted or inline due to buzzing which is not necessarily always an earthing problem
You need to inspect all you cables make sure they are the correct type (shielded leads) make sure all the plugs are clean and the sockets are clean, If you have turntables make sure the connections on the heads are all correct and clean and the needle cartridges are fitted properly

If you are struggling give me a call

Had 20 odd years of dealing with this sort of stuff 10 minutes before a gig

Oh by the way Mike you didn’t need to buy the hardware you could have used roxio 6 this has facilities for recording, filtering, graphic adjustments , removal of hiss ,bass boost ,de click ,as well as other stuff, All from line in or mike input on the back of your pc

The problem i thought was maybe with the amp i bought here, so being a clever prat i wired an earth cable to the amp frame.

Guess what, loads of smoke and a reasonable bang.

I have a light box fitted and even this causes clicks.

I replaced the amp and really dont want to blow another so i was curious as to whether i could sort of isolate each electrical system.

I used to own many DJ units the last and best was a Thames 2. and never had any problems.

The noise is not there when i start but gets worse with use, ie after a couple of mins.

If your amps chassis frame already is grounded, (it is), and you put a 110V cable on the chassis, well, you have a shortcut.
I guess you have a "double grounded" amplifier with a sort of serated screw for ground purposes on the rear side of your amp.

I suppose the noise you hear is from the transformer.
This can happen when the enamelled metalplates in your amp looses it's grip.
Difficult to get rid of that noise, but the transformer must be checked.
When the trafo is cold then the plates are ok. When they heat up they expand and they start to osiliate, thus making the noise.

There’s a blast from the past Citronic Thames 2 thats the one with the funky auto cue that always ended up the wall and wrecking needles ,i had a Citronic Avon for about a million years, almost….. Same never a problem had it serviced regularly
The amp going bang would suggest a more serious fault within the amp its self, even more so now it’s gone

BANG!

I have a new amp as this happened about a year ago.

I never had any probs with the Thames 2 but the fact that Dave knew it was a Citronic does surprise me.

I now know he must be an aged DJ, lucky for him that they play 7in 45s. :thumb:

I really need to get this prob sorted so if Dave or someone can take a look great.

This maybe worth a new thread.

Basically you need to install a "client" which manages the downloads for you, I use ABC (Another Bittorrent Client). Then you search through the torrent sites such as torrentspy.com for what you want to download. It works by sharing small parts of the incomplete file as opposed to all of it.
