Upgrade to Windows 7?

Post by Green Nomad »

Hi,

I must be one of the only users, among my work colleagues, of Windows Vista. It has been ok until recently where I am finding a lack of updating and service pack. Now I am getting problems with my video/graphics card. I am getting a message instead of my screensaver,,,ie.'' screensaver unable to run, need to update video card, or one compatible with direct 3d''

I'm not sure but maybe an upgrade to windows 7 may help, or is it a hardware problem?...

If I choose to upgrade the OS, can anyone recommend where to buy windows 7 upgrade in Hua Hin?

Cheers GN.

I can't recommend it, but I saw Windows 7 for sale in IT City on top floor of shopping mall a couple of days ago. I think it was 4,200 Baht.

Did this screen saver ever work on your computer? That message indicates it shouldn't work at all, so if it has worked I'd try uninstalling the screensaver and reinstalling. Or just uninstall and try a different one. Or just uninstall, period. It's been many years since screen technology meant they needed a screen saver.

The strange thing is if I do a system restore to a specific date, one that I had not changed or deleted anything, it clears the problem and the screen saver and resolution works correctly. However the date, which is 22/09/13 cannot be brought up again as a restore point. What am I doing wrong?..Can I regain this restore point, and why does the screen saver work after this reboot?.

Maybe I should just upgrade and hope this resolves it. GN

Yes, Windows 8 sux!!! But Windows 7 is possibly the best OS Microsoft has ever made. So if you want to stick to M$ products, Win7 is the best solution.

Win 8 and Vista both suck. I just bought a used desktop with Win 7 and I am backing it to XP PRO. I can't think of anything Win 7 does for me over XP PRO but plenty I don't like. I'm curios why you like Win 7 so much. Am I missing something?

It is much more stable than XP, and it also a lot more secure than XP. That is the best reasons for using Win7 over XP.

I stuck with XP a long time after Win7 came out because I liked it so much, but after being forced to get a new laptop that had Win 7 Pro pre-installed, and after slowly getting used to the differences from XP, I must admit I today prefer Win7.

It's probably a familiarity thing with me. I used 8 for the first time 2 days ago. It took me about 10 minutes to get beyond the initial front end GUI. Once I'd got beyond that, there was a lot of similarity with Windows 7. Within an hour, I could barely tell the difference. Basically it was the front end GUI that put me off.

To me, it's a case of change for change sake. They've tried to fix something that's not broken. Of course, the 'boys toys brigade' will have to buy it, which makes Microsoft more money.

But I thought 8 was necessary for a touch screen PC? I now find my non-touchscreen laptop laborious to use compared to the small acer I have and will ensure the next laptop I buy is touchscreen.

No idea - I was using it on a basic laptop, setting it up for a friend.

Out of interest, do you only use the touchscreen when in tablet format, or when it's built as a laptop as well?

Many new laptops 15/17 inches, are now built for touchscreen use. All those I have seen use windows 8. Incidentally, a free upgrade is being prepared for 8 which I believe is quite imminent? Not sure about that though.

I wouldn't want to use 8 without fingers! On my acer, which converts to a tablet, its touchscreen on both. I tend to use a combination of finger to screen and keyboard when both parts are connected.

Although Windows 8 is also designed for touch screen (the Windows Surface computer which I have not yet seen in Thailand) it works perfectly well with a mouse and does NOT need a touch screen for any functions. Windows 8 is much more efficient with resources than Windows 7 and also much more stable (system crashes and blue screens do not happen any more). Everything you had in earlier versions of Windows is still there in Windows 8 plus a lot more. Sometimes it's just a question of learning to find it. The interface has not changed, if you wish to use the old desktop it's still there with one click of the mouse. There is just an extra, modern interface that you can use instead if you so wish. There will be a new release (Windows 8.1) on 18th October which brings back the Start Button. Don't be afraid of change, the world doesn't stand still, why should you? There are still Amstrad and MS-DOS computers in the antique shops if you wish to use one of those. Of course Microsoft, like any other company, are trying to take your money but they have enough sense to realize that there products have to be good to compete in the market place with Apple and Google. Give Windows 8 a try or transfer to Apple, don't live in the past!
