Do DVD's play on video CD's?

Post by caller »

I want to send some DVD's (as I can't get VCD's), in English, to Thailand. But the machine the G/F has (not in HH) is a video CD. Does anyone know if they will still play?

I have a very basic DVD player myself and it says that I can play video-CD's on it but I might lose any pre-recorded material (whatever that is). It also plays various other things, but only DVD's from `region 2'.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

In short no, you can't play DVDs on a VCD player.

If you've a computer, you can convert DVD's into CVD's.
Programms like "DVD Shrink", "DVD Decrypter", "YASA vob to MPEG converter"...etc. are very helpful and easy to use.
You can also "change" the so-called "region" for DVD's.
To find and download these programs try Google or Yahoo-search.

Hogus is essentially correct although by CVD I assume what is meant is VCD unless in some parts of the world the acronym difers.

DVD is a superset of VCD. VCD is the same media technology as CD. DVD has ten times the "resolution" of CD and has the ability to be etched on both sides of the plate.

What I question is, why would anybody want to convert downwards when region free DVD players (big names) are now available for under fifty bucks.

You're right, Guess, but it seems, that Caller hasn't a region free DVD player...
(May be he has also no PC???? )

It was just a suggestion for a quick solution of his problem...and by the way, the programs are freeware...may be he want to save 50 bucks!?

Thanks for the responses. I never thought about getting a DVD for Thailand! If they're cheap out there, that's what I'll arrange.

Picking up where I left some while ago.

Can anyone offer any advice on the cost / make of a reasonable, but unfussy DVD in Thailand? Perhaps in sterling or Baht.

It will probably be purchased in Korat.

It would just be useful to have some sort of marker.

Many thanks. :thumb:
