I've always found the sea safe enough, but if there is more than one of you swimming, it's always wise for somebody to keep jellyfish watch. They've never got me yet, but the rest of my family have been stung at one time or another.

The worst time is during the rainy season when currents bring more of them into shore, so July - October time. Your best bet is to walk along the beach a bit and if you see lots washed up, be careful.
Most will only cause irritation but there is at least one that is more serious and I've seen some nasty scarring from their stings. They're not box jellies but painful nonetheless.

The kite surfers wear them for just that reason, or at least the few I've talked with.

A jellyfish feels like you've been stung by a stinging nettle ( for those brits amongst us ). Nothing to be worried about. The more serious ones are a lottery of sorts....maybe 1 in10,000 that you'll get one, no different to crossing Petchkasem road on an evening.

Just to add some reality on the subject before we see a wave of overweight farangs squeezed into Spandex tights.... not a sight for me thank you - the banana hammocks are quite enough already to put me off my food.

Dip into the see with a pair of shorts and you're not gonna die.

If you do get stung, the best anti-venom for quick relief is vinegar. If vinegar is not readily available, you can rest assured that your body produces a ready supply of a quite acceptable substitute, just pee on the affected area. (Not recommended if the sting is on your face) BTW--this is NOT a joke, vinegar and pee have nearly identical acidity levels, and neutralize the sting-venom. It won't work on Box-Jellyfish, but on normal moderate stings it does work a treat.

Jellies are one thing, water quality and what's locally allowed to flow into the sea....is another.

Too true

Keep your mouth shut unless you like eating turds

Not only does some wastage from HH get out there but beach vendors go in for a turd drop and also pee close to the Sofitel wall

When my wife is here she refuses to go in the water for at least 2 kms from the Hilton

Jellies? Swim where Thais swim. They can spot them better than us

Walked the beach this morning and there wasn't a washed-up jelly in sight all the way to Khao Takieb. They could be lingering a bit further out though.
It had been a few weeks since I'd walked it and evidently the beach had suffered a bit from storms we've been having lately. However, there were plenty of workers out this morning collecting debris and I was impressed by how clean it looked although I've got nothing to guage that by when it maybe was at its worst.
As already said, I'm not sure about the water quality and very rarely go for a dip unless I need to cool off briefly during a walk in the hot season.

The above is true and I believe male pee is better than female pee because its stronger, just in case anyone was interested. :)
