Pattaya beach could erode away within five years....

Post by PeteC »

This is something Hua Hin should be concerned about also as time passes. The old man in the article is correct that in certain months the beach becomes bigger, but the slope and drop off has become much more pronounced over the years. The sand is indeed being washed out to sea. Pete

Pattaya beach could erode away within five years, academic warns

"If we don't do something, Pattaya Beach will likely vanish within five years," said Prof Thanawat Jarupongsakul, a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University.
The latest survey found Pattaya's shore was only four or five metres deep, compared to 35.6m in 1952 and 18.7m in 2002, he told a meeting on the master plan for the development of Pattaya Beach.
The plan recommends drawing back sand that has been swept away. Up to 200,000 cubic metres would be needed.
"The refilling process will take about one year," he said.
Then the beach would be restored to a state very similar to 1952.
"This measure proved successful in Japan and Singapore," he said.
It would not hurt the environment either because the sand belonged to the beach, he said.
Researchers would need to inform locals of this choice and hear their opinions before the master plan could be implemented.
"The sand refilling will take place only after locals and authorities give approval," he said.
Pattaya City Major Ittipon Khunpleum said the erosion of Pattaya Beach was an urgent problem.
"All parties should lend a hand," he said.
Rerm Chiawkij, however, was reluctant to embrace the idea of reconstituting the beach. This 78-year-old man has rented beach chairs there for half a century and does not think there is any real problem.
"From what my eyes can see, the beach gets smaller between November and February only. But when the wind changes direction after that, the beach gets bigger again," he said.
The sand project could waste the budget for nothing, he said.
Former prime minister Anand Panyarachun, who is in his late 70s, believes efforts must be launched soon to save Pattaya Beach.
"When I came here many decades ago, Pattaya was much more beautiful than today," he said.
Montra Krachubkrachuay, a 35-year-old visitor from Bangkok, was shocked to learn that Pattaya Beach could sink beneath the waves.
"This beach is so close to the capital," he said.

Do you know when that photo was taken, Pete? If very recently, then it dosn't look too different from sections of the beach in Hua Hin - at this time of year.
The deckchair renter may have got it partially right when he says that it's always like that between Nov-Feb.
Same here. Tides are high every day and have been during the above months for as long as I can remember. There a small stretch between the Sofitel and Marriott that can be slightly underwater, although it's getting clearer. The beach restaurant just past the Sofitel has had sandbags outside of it since early December (maybe before) and the beach south of The Hyatt is only walkable with care - you're wading upto waist deep for the most part from there almost to Khao Takieb.

The photo was from today's BKP story on the same subject so it was taken recently. Yes, no doubt about the monthly differences in tides and levels but even I from our regular trips there have noticed a general deterioration over the years regardless of month. Pete

That's a scary photo Pete. OK as Johan comments it's 'a huge problem for tourism - that's all' which may be partially true in Pattaya, but certainly not in HuaHin.

Yesterday the earth opened up and swallowed a large frangipani tree. Between it and the ocean is a high stone wall 20cm thick. It seems as if the fierce waves and the undertow were the cause. We also have a large hole in the ground further along the wall which until last week was part of our lawn. This sinks a little every year but the height of the tides and the force of the waves these last couple of weeks is doing more damage than usual to us on Takiab beach.

So it's true then, well I never!!

EDIT: Sorry, edited to clarify my comment above ... A friend who lives there told me a while back that German tourists had devised a new strategy to combat their towels being nicked during breakfast.

I wonder if there is a will to do anything.Do many tourists care?
Generally tourists go to pattaya for one of two activities; one of them is golf.
