Giving up smoking

Post by lindosfan1 »

Not sure where this fitted, but found a cure for smoking I had not seen before.
Below is the health warning on side effects
CHANTIX is a prescription medicine to help adults 18 and over stop smoking. You may benefit from quit-smoking support programs and/or counseling during your quit attempt. It’s possible that you might slip up and smoke while taking CHANTIX. If you do, you can stay on CHANTIX and keep trying to quit.

Important Safety Information

Some people have had changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions while using CHANTIX to help them quit smoking. Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX. If you, your family, or caregiver notice agitation, hostility, depression, or changes in behavior, thinking, or mood that are not typical for you, or you develop suicidal thoughts or actions, anxiety, panic, aggression, anger, mania, abnormal sensations, hallucinations, paranoia, or confusion, stop taking CHANTIX and call your doctor right away. Also tell your doctor about any history of depression or other mental health problems before taking CHANTIX, as these symptoms may worsen while taking CHANTIX.

Some people can have serious skin reactions while taking CHANTIX, some of which can become life-threatening. These can include rash, swelling, redness, and peeling of the skin. Some people can have allergic reactions to CHANTIX, some of which can be life-threatening and include: swelling of the face, mouth, and throat that can cause trouble breathing. If you have these symptoms or have a rash with peeling skin or blisters in your mouth, stop taking CHANTIX and get medical attention right away. Do not take CHANTIX if you have had a serious allergic or skin reaction to CHANTIX.

The most common side effects include nausea (30%), sleep problems, constipation, gas, and/or vomiting. If you have side effects that bother you or don’t go away, tell your doctor.

You may have trouble sleeping, vivid, unusual, or strange dreams while taking CHANTIX. Use caution driving or operating machinery until you know how CHANTIX may affect you.

CHANTIX should not be taken with other quit-smoking products. You may need a lower dose of CHANTIX if you have kidney problems or get dialysis.

Before starting CHANTIX, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you take insulin, asthma medicines, or blood thinners. Medicines like these may work differently when you quit smoking.

The only way to give up smoking is willpower. Put down the cigarette and walk away. That's what I did 20 years ago. Of course I missed smoking but it eventually got to the point that I couldn't even be around people who smoked.

Fast forward to five years ago: at a party of "sex, booze & rock 'n' roll" I smoked one cigarette and I actually liked it! Ever since I smoke two with my drinks before dinner and two after dinner. I enjoy it but I don't have the urge to smoke during the day.

to give up smoking you have to have a reason and will power, most people on 1,2 or 3rd attempt can do it, for me first time i gave up it was for 6mth second time 3 mths then about a year later it was permanent, i did it cold turkey im not a big believer of patches and the like but im sure those sorts of things help some people, i think its like anything, if your trying to abstain keep your mind busy elsewhere.

I gave up smoking eight years ago after:

1. My eye consultant showed me how I would be blind in 6 months

2. My doctor told told me the surgeons would start by amputating my toes and work upwards [Diabetics suffer from nerve and circulation damage especially at the body's extremities again aggravated severely by smoking]

Fear of the health consequences provided the motivation and will power achieved the result.

However I am still permitted by my doctors to drink alcohol!

Agree, only way to do it is just stop, exercise will power and you've really got to want to do it for an important thing like family and be ready to change. For me, woke up one morning when I was 36 and looked at the empty bottle of vodka and ash tray full of butt-ends and thought about it, decided there and then that I wanted to live a longer life with my wife and haven't touched either hard liquor or cigarettes since. However, I still drink way too much beer/red wine really.

This idea that you need all these patches/potions/withdrawal aids etc is bollox and is perpetuated by the industry that has sprung up around it -not surprisingly- to make you spend money.

Nicotine exits the system completely after 72 hours, it's habitual action and mental compliance/frailty that prevents people from giving up, just have to show some grit and character if you really want to do it to show that you are in charge of your life.

I should have done it earlier but I can't see any circumstance now that I'd return to being a smoker. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed every cigarette I smoked and every bottle of vodka I drank, it was just time to ditch it at an age that I could still get away with it.

I fully respect anyone who does smoke or drink hard liquor, it's great fun, I did it for a full 20 years, just was that it was time, for me only, to change it all. Notwithstanding my vices -needless to say she wasn't a fan of in the main- the Mrs was much happier when I surprised her by just deciding to do it for the future.

Suppose the reason/situations people have/are in are different. Just my 10 bahts worth.

The craziest thing is, i can do 3 hrs in an airport lounge,9 flying to Mumbai, another 2 hrs waiting for a connecting flight and then 3 more to Bkk. I eat drink and sleep on the plane and it just dosen't bother me because i know i can't have one and i'm fine in myself and i don't really miss it. As soon as i see the exit of Bkk i'm fumbling for my tabs and i can't light one up quick enough!!!! Complete madness and i'm aware i'm doing it. Still dosen't stop me though!!!!

Mr plum most things work if you want them to.
It is my fault the thread has concentrated on giving up smoking, I was actually pointing out the dangers of the drug they were promoting, The warning list is horrendous, now I thought you would have picked up on that

I am currently reading the book ' Easy way to stop smoking' by A Carr..;some very interesting thoughts on how to get rid of the 'brainwashing' and to re-program your mind into not seeing cigarettes as a 'reward', like smokers tend to do...
