Jellyfsh

Post by JW »

Very good friend was stung by a jellyfish yesterday, it was a small sting on his foot but the outcome was quite serious. This is very uncommon, a serious allergic reaction and the onset of symptoms came after 3 or 4 hrs but they hit hard and fast.

The team at San Paolo did a great job and within a few hours he was ok. Just a note of caution that if your are stung or bitten by anything, at the first sign of nausea/dizziness/muscle pains go to hospital quickly.

Are you sure it was a jelly fish? The most I have experienced were a few red marks, and that only once or twice in all the time I've been here. You also see loads of kids playing in the water when there are jellies about and nobody seems to bother.

Very true JW, a friend's son was also stung over the weekend on the beach the other side of Takiab rock. I myself had a nasty sting there a year or so ago and there were a few biggies washed up on the beach. It is definitely the season for them.

If you do get stung there is a plant called "pak boong talay" (don't know it in English) that grows on the beach, crush up a few leaves and rub it into the affected area, they will pull out the nematocysts and reduce the swelling and stinging sensation.

That's quite interesting Buksi. I know Pak Boong is Chinese Water Spinach in English, but as you have a "talay" after the name, I assume it's a different plant.

BTW, I have also heard vinegar helps if you get stung.

A lot of access points to popular beaches in Northern Australia have a box (Like a mail box) with a bottle of vinegar handy to treat jelly fish stings.

My friends reaction was an allergic shock, similar to people who have peanut allergy or bee stings, he is at home now recovering. His body basically went into shock, airway closed up it was really scary. Most people would have just had the usually sting that vinegar helps to neutralize. Box jelly fish are in the gulf of Thailand and are very dangerous more common in Samui area. (did a bit or reading after this happened!).

John

Dont mess with Box Jellyfish most people die when stung. The actual best cure to relieve pain from a jellyfish sting is warm/hot water poured over the area for about 5 mins .This eases the pain and washes off any stingers left by the jellyfish.
Can remember getting stung by bluebottles (type of jellyfish in Australia) when I was young and the the cure back then was rubbing it with sand or peeing on the area .Which we found out later sand was the worst thing to do ,but peeing on the area did relieve the pain suppose it worked like hot water.

Yours in keep box jellyfish for pets here in OZ along with snakes and redback spiders

Mark, there's a very small one you have down there about the size of your thumb which is said to be fatal almost all of the time. Great danger is that it's so small people can't see it before they run into it. I forget the name? I remember seeing something months ago that they suspect they have worked there way up to Indonesia and perhaps into the Gulf of Thailand as well. :( Pete

Hi Mark, After this experience i aint messing with anything jelly like on the beach or in water! My friend is back home now recovering, he is feeling very tired still - it was a close thing.

That wee thing is called Irukundi - easy to find on google... nasty wee bugger.

Got a little trip planned to bangsapan soon, gonna be checking the water very carefully!

Hi JW, I hope your friend recovers okay. I get a similar allergic reaction (airwaves) when I inadvertently eat a food type I'm allergic to. Mostly, its not too serious and I cope, but on a couple of occassions I've had to get urgent medical help - its very scary and as you say, leaves you drained, even though it appears what your friend went through was much more serious.

As for Bang Saphan, just watch out for these critters - From near I-Talay, past Sunrise and on to the pier, they were regularly spaced out along the beach (in January), they were the best part of 3-foot across! You guy's might be used to that, but it came as a shock to me!

In the North of Aus where you get these type of things you have the most beautiful of beaches that no one swims on during most of the years.

If you do not have vinegar then urine will do the job. Do not try to rinse off with fresh water if stung in the sea. Only seen 2 boxes in over 5000 dives in the gulf. One hit my wifes student on the arm. Wound looked like he had been branded by a hot iron. Most no worse than a stinging nettle.
