Stinging Armpits
Stinging Armpits
Yeah, I know, a weird thread title but:
I've been doing some swimming lately in a pool that could be highly chlorinated. Must admit that when I'm finished I just pack up and get home - no shower at the pool.
A bit later, maybe 3-4 hours or so, I have a shower and when I put roll-on deordorant on it stings like anything - only for a minute or so.
I've never had the problem before, even when swimming and have tried a change of smelly stuff but that didn't get rid of the sting.
I can only put it down to chlorine in this pool. Anyone else have any other suggestions other than just stay dirty?

If you find a pool in Hua Hin, or anywhere else apart from the beach, that is not chlorinated, then keep well away from it!richard wrote:Thought most pools were salted not chlorinated. Must admit Ive not come across a chlorinated pool in HH

Lomu, if it is not something that you have had a problem with before, it may be some anti fungicide, or similar, that the particular pool is using as an additive. It is always a good idea to shower, with soap, asap after using a pool.

Re: Stinging Armpits
Hi Lomu,
I had a similar problem about 2 years back with stinging armpits and allmost weeping armpit blisters (nice) which I had never had before.
I found out that I had grown allergic to deodorants which contain alcohol. I now use any type as long as they contain no nasty's, and no more problems.

That was my first thought. I had a similar problem with deodorants a few years ago. However I didn't respond earlier because mine did not have a link with swimming pools.PAINTER V2 wrote:Hi Lomu,

Thanks folks.
I've never had this before. It's strange that it only ever happens after I've swum in this one pool.
Again, I really don't think that deodorants are the problem. I've been here for years, swum in a number of pools and it's never happened.
Maybe I should watch the regular swimmers there who always shower off after getting out of the pool as Nereus says

Funnily enough I was in the pharmacy with the very same problem today, the man gave me Starda B cream cost 90baht to put on 3 times a day and what a relief. Don't know what caused it, maybe the swimming pool or maybe deodourant. But whatever it was it was driving me crazy.
Re: Stinging Armpits
A lot of people are confused on this subject Richard. In a nut shell, a pool with salt just hasn't had salt thrown in and becomes like the sea. Salt water pools have an apparatus with electrodes attached to the filter which turns the salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine which in turn keeps your pool free of bacteria. When the chlorine breakdowns from the sun and other influences, it simply turns back to salt again and the cycle repeats via the electrodes. You have as much chlorine in a saltwater pool as you have in a pool where straight powered or liquid chlorine is introduced. The salt in the water tends to keep one's skin softer and smoother and some then came to the conclusion that there was no chlorine in the water. I have that problem from time to time Lomu but it only appears in the hot season. I think rash/chafing/irritation caused by the heat and too much sweat. Get some St. Luke's prickly heat powder and put it on at night with no deodorant to gum things up. Should take care of it. Pete

Shower straight away Lomu - as Nereus says - to be safe. Or just take a pack of wet wipes to do a temporary job if the shower is too much hassle. Underarms can be delicate little places and a nice humid breeding ground for nasties. Along with all those pores - if you get an infection and abscess you'll know about it!
I don't think it would harm to change deodorant as well. I find rollons can be too strong and sting-ey and stick to a Dove stick these days, which is one of the alcohol free products.

I decided to look this up and believe it or not this thread has already made the first page on Google. Answers seem to be the same as we're talking about on here, although some are saying anxiety can cause it.

If it is anxiety it may be because somebody wrote about not using anything with alcohol in it!prcscct wrote:I decided to look this up and believe it or not this thread has already made the first page on Google. Re: Stinging Armpits
I had the same problem (stinging) and changed from commercial deodorants to that semi transparent Alum crystal.
Used it for a week, then went back to underarm with Aloe Vera and no alcohol. Worked a treat.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Funny I can only see three replies in this thread but it says there are more...
I had this - the stinging armpits thing in Thailand a few times, and in London during exceptionally hot weather / commuting on the tube etc
I think it's related to high body temperature and is most noticeable when you go in the sea for a swim.
bit like prickly heat - could also be a touch os ' Shrimp Rash' or similar food / mineral reaction
Cooling down, drink more water, apply Aloe vera and/or sudocream seems to sort it
