What's your Hua Hin background?
What's your Hua Hin background?
I have recently heard a couple of comments regarding the type of people that read and contribute to this forum and website so I thought I'd start a couple of polls to get a bigger picture of how you all came to Hua Hin and what it is about that place that attracts you.
This first one is asking about your Hua Hin history, basically how long you have been here and your visiting patterns.
This poll is open to all so don't be shy, feel free to add to it and give us some more background if you like.

HH experience
Three short trips, 6 weeks each time. First year in Nov. Dec of 2000, stumbled on HH after gettin three straight days of rain in Samui, and finding the first flight out (when there still were flights!!). I liked the more laid back style of the 'girlie scene' here compared to Patong, and Samui.
I also like to play golf, and got to know Bernie and the Hua Hin Golf Society, last year, brought the clubs, and played quite a bit. Unfortunately the Golf Society has so many regular members now, I had trouble getting out to play with them this year.
Have planned a 5 month stay Jan 2006 to end of May, will use HH as base to explore more of Thailand, Cambodia and possibly Myanmar. then retirement in 2007.... waahhooooo!

Made nine trips to LOS since 2000 - my brother lives over here and I initially came out to see him when he lived in Cha Am. Got the bug and never looked back.
Usually in the country for approx six weeks a year - base myself in Hua Hin but try to visit other places for a few days at a time. Been to Samui, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Angkor Wat in the last couple of years. Know Bangkok (well Sukhumvit) fairly well also.
Like Hua Hin a lot - know a few people around town and always have a great time when I'm over.

First went there in 2002 with a mate who'd been going for hols there all his life from the time he was a kid. Loved the weather and relaxed lifestyle and felt it was the most relaxing holiday I had ever had.
Also got hooked up with a thai bg on my first trip, so went back a further 3 times. The last trip was a bit of a surprise to her, especially since she was "entertaining" another farang that particular week, so it was a stormy time to say the least.
Haven't been back since and now pretty settled in the UK with a lovely singaporean lady. Although I miss Hua Hin very much and would love to return some day, I don't see it as a possibility given my current circumstances. Shame!

Forgot to mention, my first time in Hua Hin was in 1990 (looked a bit different then) and been visiting for work and leisure regularly since 1995 before moving in.

First visit here was a few days break in 1999 when I was staying in Bangkok, but didn't really explore much so although I liked it I didn't get much of a feel for the place. Visited again very briefly in 2001, again as a break from Bangkok, and then again in 2002 when my best mate from England was over, which was the first time I really got to know the town and sample the bars etc. I don't think it was related
but by the end of that year my Thai wife and I had separated and I found myself heading to HH again, and I settled here in January 2003, and have been here ever since, apart from month long trips home roughly every year.

First arrived in 1999 while travelling around Thailand, found it to be one of those places where you just got stuck and your plans to move on never actually materialize.
Met some good people here and found some work in early 2000. Have been here ever since.

A person living in Hua Hin permanently is properly called a "ho". Rhymes wid da woid signifying a real rake.Bamboo Grove wrote:After almost 13 years in Bangers got an opportunity to move here in Feb 2002. Hi from Alberta
First came to Hua Hin on a daytrip from BKK in 2001 I think. Since I was with the wife and kids it struck me how much more like European family beach resorts HH was than other places I had been to in LOS. After that I used to keep in regular contact with an American pal of mine who moved down to HH for a couple of years and lived a fairly...entertaining... lifestyle. The laid back ex-pat scene he described kind of attracted me back to the place. I used to love BKK before the kids arrived but now its definitely HH for me.
Now we have a house in Hua Hin and would like to spend more time there than the month or so each year that I am currently able to. Currently in the UK working as an architect and working out whether self employment is likely to be a route to achieving that!
