What does Hua Hin need?

Post by buksida »

I found a topic on another forum which I found interesting. It was basically asking both tourists and residents what they think Hua Hin needed or lacked that you could get in Bangkok, Phuket or other bigger places.

I responded with computer hardware (you know the geek in me is trying to escape :twisted: ) as stuff here is limited and way over priced.

Also beach bars and restaurants, like the ones you get on Samui where the restaurant is actually on the beach and they have those little tables and mats that you can go and relax on ... I like those.

What do you think Hua Hin needs?

'
- a bar with decent sound reproduction (there's not even one in HH);
- a cinema;
- a bowling alley;
- a true broadband service;
- an audio/video shop with classical music and alternate movies;
- a jellyfish-free beach;
- a beach with transparent water;
- beach cowboys who really clean after their horses (there's not even one in HH);
- less tourists;
- a clothes shop with adult sizes, and;
- shop assistants, policemen, nurses, doctors, bank tellers, postal workers and others in service industries
who have even slight understanding of english.

What does Hua Hin need?....hmmm at the very least the following......

1. All the stray dogs need rounding up and shooting.
2. All vehicles need to have an M.O.T or be taken off the road.
3. An endorsable driving licence system.
4. The same laws of justice applied to both Thais and Ferang.
5. A cinema.
6. A decent department store.
7. Houses built with more than 2ft of land around them.
8. A city planning department.

That said I still love it to bits here! :thumb:

I agree with most folks here about what Hua Hin needs.

Re K'Buksida's idea - I do love those on-the-beach restaurants in Samui, but I wonder how they would do in Hua Hn. I noticed that the local business folks in Samui actually cleaned up every night to make sure that the beach is ready and clean for the day folks to enjoy. In Hua Hin, I don't see the same behavior. Those beach umbrella vendors tend to leave junk all over the place and the beach area near the Sofitel and the Hilton are looking quite shabby these days. It would be great if the Hua Hin municipal authority would take care of the beach better so that we can have on-the-beach restaurants as well as a clean beach during the day.

I would like to see Hua Hin remaining a family retreat, however. There are so many places for the sex industry in Thailand for people to go already - it would be nice for people with children to have a place to go and spend a nice vacation too.

I agree with the posts regarding the beach. A while ago, I saw the results of a survey done by a BKK university. HH rated as the third best beach in Thailand in terms of water cleaniness and lack of rubbish on it. I hate to think what the others must look like. (They didn't test everywhere, though).
For me, number one is for HH to have a police force who actually enforce the already adequate driving laws. They're Keystone Kops here. It's a shame to see or hear of so many people killed or badly injured on our local roads.Watch out. Schools are on summer hols for another month and a half or so and Sonkran is coming up.

There needs to be proper parking facilities throughout the town especially near the center. The road that leads down to the beach between the Bazaar and Soffitel is always a nightmare with cars trying to find "non existant" parking spots and having to u turn their way back out. Parking meters would be a good idea, especially along Phetch Kasem in the town centre, creating some revenue which could be used to help keep the town clean and tidy.

Special "parking bays" for motorcycles would also help, how many times have you come across a motorcycle taking up enough space for two cars or more!!!!!!!

Definitely the dog problem needs resolving, the problem is epidemic along the new road that runs up to the View Point from the town side.

Another area(s) of concern is Petch Kasem Road after you leave the town centre going both North and South. Traffic quickly speeds up and turning across the traffic into the many side roads is really dangerous especially at night. There should be a strict speed restriction enforced along these sections of the main road or even "sleeping police men" or roundabouts at particularly hazardous junctions such as Soi Maekaeb.

Owners of vacant plots should be made to keep them respectable or face heavy fines.

The permanent smell of raw sewerage at the end of Naresdamri needs resolving.

A lot of the things that people have mentioned are Thailand in general problems that Hua Hin seems to suffer such as: dogs, lack of parking, useless police force, diabolical traffic and road management etc etc.

However it does seem that Hua Hin may suffer these a bit more than other destinations. The parking and traffic problems have got worse (and will continue to do so) as the town has expanded. IMO the police force will never improve unless the government pays them more to prevent them being so dependent on income from "other sources".

And as for the dogs ... :guns:

All of the above plus:

Proper control of kite surfers, their proximity to the main beach areas and their damned quad bikes (and all other vehicles on the beach) - they are a constant menace to families with small children.

At the very least better lighting and reflective warning signs at the level crossings on Sois (such as 102) leading to the newer residential areas west of the railway line. :idea:

It is okay posting these concerns, but does any one have any ideas how these concerns can be brought to the attention of the appropriate local authority, without offending anyone, with a view of getting some action.

Does any one have direct contact to the Mayor?

The parking meters is a good first step as it will generate extra income.

Does any one own/know a parking meter company which could do a feasibility and present a proposal to the LA.

Or better still why not the members of this forum form their own company, their first project being the parking meters, the new company could offer to install and maintain the meters free of charge and pay a % of revenue back to the LA. The balance of income would be used to fund the company and promote other "We love Hua Hin " projects.

250 meters charging 10 Baht per hour, 8 hours per day, 30 1/2 days per month, will generate a monthly revenue of 610,000 Baht

It would give all you rich retirees something to do.

Something that always strikes me as obvious is to close off Soi Binterban to all but walking traffic between 6 oclock in the evening and 6.00 in the morning.
This could be easily achived with a barrier at each end.
All the deliveries could easily be made before 6.00 or carried to the relevant bar.
Its only a small soi and some of the lunatics belting up and down on bikes and cars need stopping!
Its primerily a walking street and it needs to be made safer.

I forgot - crossing Petchkasem Road needs to be made safer with a couple more bridges at strategic points either side of the main crossroads. But better designed than the one down near Svensens - that is so ugly and awkward, with each riser different to the one above and below! When you drive through this part of town, just register the frightened look in the eyes of tourists trying to cross Petchkasem from Satukarn Square.
