The banks must have known this was coming, but not exactly when. I've been watching buy/sell rates the past couple of weeks and the pound at one time had more than a 3 baht difference between buy and sell, whereas other major currencies were in the range of 1, 1.5 to less than 1. Pete

I've thought for a while now that the Pound/Euro rate is being engineered in some way to allow a more acceptable (i.e. excuse for implementing) change from pound to euro.

If the Uk would have joined the Euro not only the pint would cost the same but also the fuel you use to get to the pub!
I walked but I know what you mean. Actually I was working in Luxembourg pre-crisis where a pint of Guiness set you back 5.50 euro, whereas here in Somerset I bought several of them last night for 2.00 pounds (Thursday night special) so all is not lost.
Ironically one of the reasons for not joining the Euro in the first place was that the ECB was only offering 1.3 something to the pound.
Steve, if you would have crossed the border, actually no border border any more, to Bitburg/Germany, you might have got a bargain yesterday at 1,90 Euro a pint, every day low price.
Used to work in Luembourg as well some moons ago mate.
