wi fi internet

Post by phaaw ling »

ok i'm from australia where there are several internet service providers that offer pre-paid wireless broadband services...you don't need to be in a 'hot spot' because in all major cities and larger rural towns one can get on-line anywhere. i have been to hua hin many times and although the hotel i stay in (on poonsuk rd) recently got wi-fi internet i'm still having trouble with the connection. i don't want to go each morning to a bar offering free wi-fi just to do email. is there a service provider that has an office in hua hin that i can pay for a pre-paid service and get on-line anywhere in town...it's mostly gonna be for email and a bit of web surfing...and doing internet check-in for my flights...looking forward to someones help...cheers

Although I've never tried it, I believe Sunshine offer fairly good WiFi coverage in central areas.

Well, given the speed advertised by citywide (100 kbps, I mean, do they actually make wifi access points that run that slow?) then sunshine is probably the way to go. I think each voucher is 300 mins in 1 calendar month for 200 baht, and almost certainly quicker. If you need more, then just buy another voucher.

Yep, CityWide is a complete waste of space (at least it was when I tried to use it). Sunshine maybe the best option or there is EDGE/GPRS via mobile which is not bad in central Hua Hin.

EDGE is excellent. Free tip for those using Sunshine Wireless.

1. Connect to wi-fi.
2. Sign-up page, sign up to freebie using any old email address (can be fake)
3. Half-hour use.
4. Change your Wi-Fi card's MAC address when time's up and repeat process. Fairly trivial in Linux (using macchanger-gtk) though I'm not sure about Windows.

In windows it is done by modifying registry values . You can't change the burned in address in any system, but you can advertise it as being something else. http://www.klcconsulting.net/change_mac_w2k.htm has a description for anyone who is interested - but if you screw up :cuss:, don't come to me about it!

At 200 Baht for 300 minutes, unless you really know what you're doing, I'd advise paying the money.

To be honest I'm not that much of a cheapskate as to actually do it but I just like finding these things, just for the hell of it really.

Btw if you want your stuff private don't use Sunshine Wi-Fi. The connection's unencrypted so it's a fairly simple matter of using something like Wireshark or Ettercap to sniff any traffic going around your area, and even stuff you send over SSL (ie online banking etc) is fairly trivial to break into with the right software. You have been warned.
