CNN have just been showing a clip of fully equipped troops blasting away with assault rifles, at targets unseen, in a manner as if they were in the centre of a war-zone.
Whatever they're firing at, it's not very good for Thailands public image.

CRES: No crackdown on reds today

Security forces will not try to disperse red-shirt protesters from their Ratchaprasong rally site today, Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, spokesman of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES), said on Friday afternoon.
His statement came after troops clashed with red-shirts on the fringes of the protest site, which led to several injuries.
"We haven't thought about dispersing them from the area today," Col Sansern told reporters.
He called on the protesters to leave the rally site and end the protest, saying that there is still time to return home.
Col Sansern also said that army chief Anupong Paojinda had assessed the situation and believed there could be attempts to incite unrest tonight.
"The army chief has told us to protect our lives and not to hurt the people," he said.
If necessary, soldiers may have to use live rounds in self defence, he said.

Can you believe this? I can't. Either the government is manipulating to save face, or the Thais who are well off enough to invest simply don't give a hoot about what's going on. Or.....all this is foreign institutional trading in the hopes the market will shoot up once the immediate problems have ended Pete

Re: Political un-rest and rally
I post this one with a BIG ??? and a few
as not confirmed yet. We've got Thais coming out from their houses here after just watching something on Thai news that said all access into Bangkok from all directions is now closed. They say that means coming from Chonburi, Issan, Hua Hin etc. Now, they don't say how close to city center these roadblocks will be, or if they're doing it at the outskirts, which would cause a huge mess. Stay tuned and please post if you hear more about this.

Natthawut warns big tragedy will happen Friday night
Natthawut Saikua, a red-shirt leader, Friday demanded Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House immediately and pull out troops or a big tragedy will happen to the country at night.
"If the prime minister does not order ceasefire, tonight will likely see a big tragedy. It is likely that Thai people will be forever feel pain in their heart because of what will happen tonight," Natthawut said.
He said the prime minister must dissolve the House and stop using violence against the protesters.
He said he did not mean the red-shirt protesters would use violence but confusion could prevail at night.

Anybody got any TV links?
Re: Political un-rest and rally
Here's one but I haven't tried it. There isn't any on going news yet. In fact the wife is in watching a Thai soap at the moment. I think they interrupt with any news, but are trying to keep the general public somewhat detached from what's going on. I.E., normal shows as usual. PeteBaaBaa. wrote:Anybody got any TV links?

If anyone has better ones, please post them.
Tonight could be very bad. Nothing we can do, but it makes me very sad (and freaking ANGRY at the red leaders who had won some major concessions from the gov't).

Four UDD leaders abandon rally
Four red-shirt leaders have abandoned the prolonged anti-government rally at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong commercial district on Friday.
"It is now clear that four of our leaders - Veera Musikhapong, Adisorn Piangket, Paijit Aksornnarong and Visa Khantap - will not come to the protest site at Ratchaprasong," United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Kwanchai Praipana said.
However, another red-shirt core member Chinawat Haboonpad, said the UDD leadership was still in unity but some leaders had a different view.
"At first, we [the red-shirt leaders] agreed to end the rally but people have died during the political clashes. We then could not come into terms because none of us want to be in prison without receiving a fair treatment," Mr Chinawat said. "If the emergency decree is revoked the police could detain us further for 84 days."
Mr Chinawat said Mrs Paijit had a sore throat and Mr Visa was taking care of her, while Mr Veera was not leaving the UDD but he was tired and he was still somewhere nearby the protest venue.
The four leaders did not attend the red-shirt meeting to discuss the group's stance today.

I feel sorry for the poor buggers who need to get from A to B (me included). If BK is shut that means people wanting to arrive and depart from the airport have no chance
In my case how do I get from Khon Kaen to Hua Hin without flying to Chang Mai and road down through Kanchanamburi?
