Also including a statement regarding Ashley Shorley from the UK: -

"Ash Shorley, 32, was reportedly taken to hospital in Phuket late last month for a pneumonia-like infection. “Ashley traveled to Thailand for a break and has ended up very poorly in hospital with a flu virus that has resulted in a collapsed lung and the possible need for an operation to remove the infected part of the lungs,” a statement reads on the page.

Mr Shorley’s parents told The Sun that they are awaiting test results to see if he has been infected by coronavirus."

First Thai infected with coronavirus

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... oronavirus

The Public Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed a 73-year-old woman being treated at a hospital in Nakhon Pathom was the first Thai found to be infected with the new strain of coronavirus.

The woman fell ill after returning from the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. She was being treated in Nakhon Pathom. Health officials confirmed she was infected with the new strain of coronavirus.

There have now been four reported cases of novel coronavirus infection found in Thailand - three Chinese tourists and one Thai.

The second Chinese tourist found to be infected has since been completely cured and has returned home, the Department of Disease Control announced on Wednesday.

Dr Sophon Iamsirithavorn, the director, said the 74-year-old Chinese woman arrived in Thailand from Wuhan on Jan 13. She was quarantined on arrival with a fever and tests confirmed she was carrying the 2019-nCoV virus.

She was treated at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Nonthaburi province.

She had since been declared free of the infection and had returned home to China on Tuesday, Dr Sophon said.

The Public Health Ministry has sought to still public fears over the new disease, a viral respiratory infection similar to SARS, with assurances that measures are in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

The government has also announced that they can control the spread by screening. No human to human transmission even though China has confirmed that it can be transmitted human to human.
They will screen for coughs, temperatures, flu like symptoms etc.

What they fail to realise is:
The incubation period — the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms — is believed to be about two weeks.
So anyone with the virus for less than a couple of weeks cannot be identified. No amount of screening will catch them and they may well have already infected other passengers on the flight.

I remember them informing the public that Thai chickens are free from disease and safe to eat. Then a couple of days later, they had to admit the opposite.

They better get an army of people in place ASAP as the guests from the north are already arriving for their seven day + New Year holiday.

I would dread arriving at the airport over this period. It will be hours upon hours to get through everything and out the door.

Coronavirus: death toll doubles to 17 as China struggles to halt spread

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... death-toll

All totals seem to be increasing very (too) quickly - a faster spread of the virus, a miss-reporting by the Chinese government (more likely IMO) or a mixture of the two?

Sorry PeteC and all, but I want to make a point (without stuffing up the thread!!). I was living in China throughout the SARS - and lived in China most of which in Chongqing where I met my dear wife (the LHG!!).

I can't tell you more than you know/think... The Chinese government lie. What I can say, it's not all Chinese that take part in this, they are also lied to. The LHG is but seriously p!$$ed off and we are both concerned about family and friends we have in China - Chongqing and Shenzhen especially. Massive worry for us - so don't tar all Chinese (or Welsh for that matter) with the same brush.....

This one is interesting, if not scary. I received the following message from a Chinese business friend.

"Do you heard of the biggest International Super Virus Research Institute is located in Wuhan(the new virus source place), only god knows what happened.".......

Looking up on the internet I find the following:

http://english.whiov.cas.cn

The makings of a good conspiracy theory to be sure, but also something to think about. If something did leak out of their institute lab somehow, they would never say a word. I doubt any country would say a word unless caught red handed.

Maybe the Thai Government should set up some check points at all the big Supermarkets. Blue Port a couple of days ago and in addition to the Chinese throng, announcements were being made in Mandarin!

Could not move in my usual shopping BigC store in Bangkok this morning. No announcements , just Chinese Musuck!
Blocking most of the shopping isles and shelves, busy with their calculators checking prices. Not sure about the reasoning there as a big percentage of what is available comes from China anyway!
