Disneyland Thailand in Hua Hin?
Scary...
I don't belive it will come true and I hope it doesn't, but if so I'll move...
Looks like that process has started.....DawnHHDRC wrote:If it happens it'll give coronaries to all of those who got so worked up about the construction of Market Village...
I propose that a Concerned Residents' Committee be established to fight this latest development in the insidious encroachment on Thai culture and the destruction of the quaint fishing village of Hua Hin.

WOW Thank you very much for your response I'm also utterly concerned that The Place where I spend my FUNfilled study years from 1999 to 2004 is turning from a small cozy "Chill Out" Fishing Resort to another Orlando major resort where half of it's Population works for Disneyland overthere.
Many of you asked why Hua Hin and not anywhere else? I can only agree with ete's earlier Statament that there's no viable Plot of Land left in the Bang Sean, Pattaya and Cholburi area left for such a massive Project. Phuket which is also very feasable for such a Project seems for many too far to travel. and why no t on the vicinty of Bangkok? hmmm beat's me too this question.
Jim was also right when he said that: "The sleepy fishing village concept, as we all know, is long gone and it is only a matter of how the town develops".
An concerned residence commitee as Jaime has propused is badly needed in Hua Hin but not to fight this latest devellopment but... to control the impact of such Big Devellpomernts that they don't get the better of us.
Lets see and follow the News closely how Disneyland Thailand furhter devellops! or if it's go up in smoke!

A Disneyland hey!
Well well well,
This does not surprise me. With Hua Hin becoming a city on the 7 Dec 2007 and all the rental taxes going up by 400% this added promotional activity to the area unfortunately makes sense in the larger scheme of things.
As most of you who live, or have lived, in Hua Hin know it is a weekend runaway for Thais. They come down in droves to visit the Kings city and the Thais are now utilising this very phenomenon to make money. I don't believe for one minute that this is for the farangs. It is for the Thais. Getting money through intra-national tourism is good and if they get more through international tourism all the better.
Gone are the quiet days of Hua Hin as she moves towards being a Provincial City. I just hope that the Gov and the MIB take moves to restrain the illicit side of things as this. If the big boys are not there already they soon will be.

I'd heard of a major fun-park in this area more than 12 months ago. At that time it wasn't specifically Disney, nad was rumoured for the north of Cha Am area.hogus wrote:hmmm...I think this is just one of these funny dreams of our Thai-friends, like becoming a 2nd Detroit, a 2nd Fashion Center, a 2nd Silicon Valley etc.
By the way, I heard "Uncle Scrooge" is still in London, isn’t he?...![]()
I suppose a theme park without him won't run well !?
I guess that this is the same issue.
Of coursemany projects go no further than this...
But, Hogus, do not dismiss all Thai ideas, Eastern Seaboard is most definitely on its way to become Detroit of the East. Today the following automakers are in Thailand:-
Nissan, Ford, GM, Volvo Car and Truck), Isuzu, Honda (Car and Motercycle), Toyota (3 facilities, plus new one in construction), Yamaha, Kawazaki, Hino, UD
Then there are JVs for assembly of:-
BMW, Mercedes
Thai Manufacturers:- Thai Rung Union
Toyota are midway through investing US$865,000,000. Bill Ford announced US$500,000,000 in Thialand within 3 years, and it seems that this will happen.
Other Europeans are looking into Thailand such as Iveco
Landrovers are assembled in the Volvo Facility
Then there are all the major component suppliers:-
Visteon, Autoliv, Zexel, Denso, Koyo, Toyoda Machine Works, Sekurit etc.... All with major plants in Thailand
Thailand is currnetly the 14th largest Auto Producer, and the 2nd Largest Pickup Manufacturer.
The Detroit of th eEast reference is true.
For Disney.... Who knows, but the information is not new

Hogus unlike "Uncle Scrooge" your right he's still in London. Mr. Charoen, The founder and CEO of Chang Beer group is Thailands riches Man and he is not politically Active (as far as I know).
Change happens we just have to learn how to adjust ourself to the new environment so it benefits us.

Well, I read about this in the Bangkok Post some months ago.Winkie wrote:Thailand is currnetly the 14th largest Auto Producer, and the 2nd Largest Pickup Manufacturer.
May be I'm wrong, but in my understanding is a car-producer the company which signs responsible for the production and not a country, which get permission from those companies to screw together some cars temporarily.
However, let’s go back to the topic.
Like many others I'm not a friend of this Walt Disney themepark-idea, especially not near Hua Hin.
I liked this small town, because it wasn't so commercial as Phuket, Koh Samui or Pattaya.
On the other side you could find whatever you like as a foreigner (good Hotels, guesthouses, international restaurants, beaches, pubs & bars, shops etc.).
In view of the new visa-regulations I'm agree with Hublet that the theme-park-idea isn't for farangs, but for intra-national tourism.
Ecologically it will be a disaster for the region; economically it would be a rise perhaps.
Not sure, if it's a smart idea if half of the locals becomes economically dependent from such a project.
WD Paris can sing a song about big dreams in the beginning and the constant fight against the bankruptcy until today.

Some of you are saying that like so many things this is just a kite flying exercise that will never come to pass. But this is Thailand's wealthiest man, and his development company, TCCL, has a history of action (i.e. completed projects). TCCL has already acquired the land, so let’s take this seriously.
What will HH be like in 10 years? What will be its size? Will there be a population of 250,000 or more? Where will prices be? There was a concept being touted by the Mr T team to develop the coast around HH into the Thai Riviera. When I first read of this concept my instant reaction was what a lot of crap. But I have recently read where the new government wants to stop promoting Thailand to low sending tourists, and to develop the higher end tourist market. HH seems to be a nice fit for this concept, and HH Disneyland might be seen as fitting into this category.
If you concentrate on floating around the centre of town, you can be blind to how far out the town is already spreading. On the tallest mountain at the back of HH there is a national park with various lookout spots. It is worthwhile going up there to see the expanse of HH, particularly at night. The city is no longer a town. But it is still a piece of heaven on earth. Let’s hope it can stay that way.

As Jim has said, we have to face the inevitable.
Hua Hin is starting to, and will grow into a major resort IMO. Bigger than Phuket in 10 - 15 years time ?? Don't bet against it.
It's driving distance from Bangkok, it's a Royal town, it has an abundance of quality golf courses, it has miles of beaches, but most of all it has land, land and more land, available for development. Something Phuket and Samui does not have.

- Location: California is now in the past hello Thailand!!
Also many Thais come to HH for holiday, and I'm sure many of them would love to have the park for the kids.
Anaheim, California home of Disneyland is always busy with kids, teens, parents, etc.
Disney was the anchor and following it was other parks, resorts, convention centers, top restaurants, hookers, conmen, pickpockets, etc.
I guess if I wanted to develop an entire area, a huge park would be a good start.
When my kids were young, the resort parks were always their first choice.
Saying that I sure hope it doesn't happen.
