Evaporative cooling will not work in this climate, or anywhere the humidity is high. They work well in a dry hot climate, and are in fact called "desert coolers" in some parts of the World.

One thing to be careful with if installing ceiling fans, is ensure that they have a strong mounting point. The suspended type of ceilings mounted on metal strips is not strong enough, unless the mounting bracket is fastened directly under a hanger that actually supports the metal strips, and therefore is itself hung off the roof structure.

Hi there Everyone

Poorsmate: Dyson's Ball Vacum cleaner
Image

I saw the Bladeless Fan by Dyson last week @ The consumer Electronics fair IFA here in Berlin! I was pretty impressed.
The initial cost of 200 Pound, Euros and Dollars will be hard to swallow @ first! But as soon as Dyson knows that Patent licenses can be sold to third partyies who are interested so in the long run prices will go down!

My installer hung the fans from wooden 2x4s screwed into roof trusses.
One of them wobbles a bit at high speed but there is a flex-type joint that seems to be designed to allow for some movement. I don't worry about it as I don't run the highest speed.

Has anyone tried to install a ceiling fan themselves? I never have and the task looks daunting. First you have to assemble the entire thing, then get the mounting bracket and support board (if any) up into the ceiling, then get the fan attached to that which can be heavy while you're balancing on a ladder. Even for a Thai with experience it always seems to be a 2 man job.

Balancing I've done. Fans come with balancing clips and some weights. It's trial and error using the clips on each blade at different locations until any wobble disappears. Then use the pre-glued weights in the same location where the clips were. For an old fan where you don't have any clips or weights around, a plastic clothes pin clip, 2-5-10 baht coins as weights, and super glue works. Pete

I've put two in here in the states.

As long as the studs on the ceiling are reasonably close it's pretty easy.

I put a brace on one, and the other went right on the stud where the light is.

Here in the states there are large "mouldings" available if you need to cover up a large hole in the ceiling!!

I haven't seen the new Dyson fans in action, but if they are as effective as their new hot air hand dryers they will be the bees knees - and certainly much safer and cleaner than traditional fans.

Yes, I forgot about that. The dirt always accumulates on the ceiling side of the blades and unseen until you remember to do it. By then, it can be a few mm deep! Pete

They are a bit tricky to install being heavy and large so an extra pair of hands is very useful.
With those metal pull chains it's safer to have an earth / ground connection which is not always provided on the lighting circuits.
It's a lot easier to just use the air-con on fan only setting !!

The Dyson fans are 20x cost of normal one but are proving popular.
Some reports say the idea was first from Japan some 30 years ago.
How long before some Chinese knock-off copies appear ??

That's the only drawback with any Dyson products IMO - the price. But the technology and development doesn't come cheap and there are always customers ready to be the first with a new product. That's where Dyson wins. Plus of course if you notice the ads - for the vacuum cleaners certainly - are aimed at a male market. Boys Toys.
Dyson has done more for womens lib than the inventor of the BarBQ.

I bought madam a Dyson fan which she blows straight at her at high speed.
It's only a venturi system that accelerates surrounding air that is dragged through the ring by the higher speed air coming out of the fine holes. Bernoulli's Principle is the basis
The blower is just as noisy a standard fan.
Of course the less clothes on skin the better that ceiling fans work compared to A/C so don't be shy.

The original ceiling fan invented in India was very quiet except when he coughed as he pulled the ceiling flap back and forth.

The palm leaf fans in the Raffles Long Bar in Singapore are unique as well. No hidden servants cranking the cranks anymore, all mechanical now and interesting to watch operate. Pete
