Thought it was the name of a local band !!!!
Have no probs paying a fair price for recorded music and DVD's as the quality is always better however the exhorb. Prices charged for originals are indeed questionable.
As for western music here - you just can't get the range and the internet represents an alternative.

worked in Chang Mai a few years ago mate. Barowners got together and raised some noise.....plod and council see their meal ticket under threat and back down rapidly under the glare of media and BKK real authorities.

Dons case is a good example of how getting BKK involved, ie the REAL authorities, can result in action whereas approaching the local make laws up as they go along idiots gets nothing done.

The legal representative of a group of owners could ask for the relevant authority for what they are doing, maybe even ask the DIP to clarify the legal status of this, citing relevant law and statute. Challenge them legally through the courts as a class action so they cant pick on any one individual barowner. Do it as a group.....works better.

A Bar Owners Association - thai and farang members - would have a better chance of making HH a viable option. As is, the scammers are having their own way and making business here increasingly difficult and unprofitable.

The only time anything positive gets done here is when the locals are subjected to the steely gaze of BKK.

There is no comparison between this scam and the tea fund/pool table tax/sod off mr plod payments, other than some of the money ends up in the same pockets.

And just to be clear bro - Im not involved with a bar. Amy is. Not me, not mine. I just act as the messenger passing on comments. Her business, not mine. I wouldnt own a business here for all the tea in China, and partcularly one that would need to employ Thais.

my attitude to this: Som Nam Na.....first time this happened 18 months ago the owners should have got together and raised a stink then. They didnt, and now they are reaping the crop their apathy sowed, and reaping it in spades.

Seems Mai Pen Rai is infectious.
Seems the translation of it is TIT.

Well said sandy.

The trouble is the bar-factions live on and organising a stand of that magnatude would take a near-alexander of bar owners to stand up and get sht sorted.
You also have the already mentioned fact that some bar owners are fringing it on the WP front. I can understand and respect this groove, but it means they are then exposed to any looking glass activities when the wheels of justice really start turning.

A difficult dilema. A gordion knot you might say...

There are some valid points made in this thread:

1) No trade association for the bar owners means they are individually vulnerabe to abuse.

2) A well organised trade association affords strength against abuse, but invites stricter interpretation of the law.

My humble suggestion would be for a number of bar owners to form an association, but not some dull forum for venting spleens and keeping minutes of meetings; more a private gentleman's club that goes heavy on the entertainment.

Meet regularly, perhaps once a month; and invite the local plod, the local brass; and make damn sure they enjoy themselves. Make them feel obligated; or at least, make them worry that if their boys get too heavy, they might not get invited to the next shindig..

There's nothing new about this approach, it's basically what the Freemasons have been doing in the west for generations.

Love it or hate it, when dealing with corruptible officialdom; it works..

In order, in order Kendo is a trade union man, unity is strength and you will be supprised what you can do on mass.

Alone in a farang sence, i travel down to swampy from Surin on the border road Arranya Prathet done this at least 10 times the last time we stopped at the airport to drop friends off, our driver went the wrong side of a bollard, cop jumps out and wants 3000 baht fine, now picture this we have allready been fined three times for no reason, so Kendo's patience is very thin, i just blown my top at this cop i was right in his face and pokeing him in his chest and he was very close to getting a big right hand, my wife got between us for his well being and then paid him 800 baht.
