Being a regular drinker that I am, I can definately say there's more and more younger (25's to 35's) people here all the time, excluding the usual students.
Just take a look around late at night in Sam Sam Bar, China Whites and the new bar that's opened/changed it's theme to v.loud dance music, directly opposite China White's.

Most are tourists, but many are coming to live/work with Dad's and family member's, in the various businesses, property, bars, teaching etc.

It's still an 'older' town to me and probably always will be compared to Phuket, Samui and Pattaya unless there is a relaxation of the nightclub/go-go bar restrictions in the area, which is highly unlikely.

To me there's far more of a younger party crowd than there was two years ago.

It seems pretty clear to me that as long as the 50 year retirement visa exists, a place like Hua Hin is going to be predominantly inhabited by an older population of falangs.
I think anyone will admit that making a living in SE Asia is not a particularly easy thing to do, and in Hua Hin, apart from tourism and property, there are none of the sorts of high paying jobs that attract ex-pats; there are no banking, oil industry, aviation, IT or related employment opportunities.
If I was still of the age group we are discussing here, I wouldn’t want to live in Hua Hin anyway, I didn’t even like living in anywhere that wasn’t a capital city or had a population under about five million, and I was more interested in night clubs than golf courses.
As to the subject of Disneyworld, if a theme park is required in the area it would be much better to build one based around Thai culture than import from another country. I have seen this done in other Asian countries, and the results can be surprising, if you have a large area of Asian styled landscaping they can be pleasant to walk around and with some decent restaurants they can be a good day out.
To me that would be much better than Mickey Mouse and MacDonald’s, but of course this will not happen as the Thais would then have to pay for it themselves!

Maybe you are living in your own world and you are thinking Hua Hin is made, to give old people all arround the globe a place where they can retire and keep a low priced life, while local people are on their service.

But i have talked to many young educated thais. And they would like of corse, that their Hometown develops. They would like to have same things like other developped countrys or Citys in Europe the US or anywehre have.

They would like to have clubs, shoppingmalls, cinemas, Entertainmentparks and so on.

I know that you dont like when YOUR  old little fishing village develops and you lose your little paradise, butt, this is not your Country you are just tolareated guests like I am.

When Hua Hin develops in the right way, there will be a good mix out of young and old falangs and thais, there will be something for everyone. More young tourists will come to hua hin and this will be great for the business as well. I am not talking of backpackers i am talking of young people from around the world and from bangkok with money in their pockets wich stay away at the moment, because hua hin has nothing for younger people and at the beach the peoples age is 50+
VeniceBeach,
I think you are generalising too much about both young and old, and assuming too much that all young people share your vision of Hua Hin, while also assuming that all old people don't. You are also missing one point at least, which is that there are plenty of other places in the world and in Thailand exactly as you describe, while there are very few like Hua Hin, so it is more understandable to want to preserve something that is rare, although ultimately a futile wish as things will change. The one thing I really object to in your latest post though is the statement "When Hua Hin develops in the right way" - that is so unbelievably arrogant, assuming that your way is the 'right' way! Everybody is different, with different opinions; my opinion is that the influx of younger tourists and residents has led to more violence in the nightlife areas, as some of the younger farangs pay less respect to the Thai ways of doing things, and some of the younger Thais respond with aggression. That has been the most obvious change in the last 4 years that I have noticed in this regard, and I hope that trend doesn't continue.
One final point I would like to add is that there have been several attempts by Thais and farang to open other entertainment venues such as clubs but almost all of them have failed because of the power of the Hilton in this town, as well as those who are in charge of the area, and these are the people who control Hua Hin's destiny, along with the under funded infrastructure which is a major limitation on any desired expansion of the town - transport links, electricity and water supply, sewage services, telephone lines - these are already insufficient for the town as it is, so grand plans to expand further are likely to fail miserably. And then there is the issue that is normally so dear to young people - the environment. Hua Hin is surrounded by National Parks, and the effect of unchecked development to create a mini city with thousands more visitors would be disastrous on the area, as well as to the air that we breathe and the water we drink and swim in. In fact just thinking about it makes me feel ill. Once the high speed ferry to Pattaya starts up go there for your fun and leave Hua Hin be. Image

You will agree with me that the one way or the other Hua Hin will grow and develop in the next view Years dramaticliy. That cant be stopped by anybody.
So it is only the question of how it develops. It can be with familiy attractions like disneyland or it can be with gogo bars and Brodels like in Pattaya etc.
I say when it develops in the right way, than it will have from every thing a bit at the right place. It will have the chilly bars, restaurants and cafes. It will have some clubs at the borders it will have some entertainment a little bit outside like disneyland, go cart, etc. it should have a bit of everything.
But if all big developpments will be stopped all the time, the town will grow with small etablissements like: Tailors, Brodels, gogo Bars and Condominiums. all the things we have already to much.

my opinion is that the influx of younger tourists and residents has led to more violence in the nightlife areas, as some of the younger farangs pay less respect to the Thai ways of doing things, and some of the younger Thais respond with aggression. That has been the most obvious change in the last 4 years that I have noticed in this regard, and I hope that trend doesn't continue.
This is your oppinion. I saw something different. When I think about it, I dont see much violence in Hua hin at all.
And when i saw it, it wherent always the young people. many times or better most times it have been an old drunk farang shouting at a Bargirl witch dont want to go with him to his Room at soi Bintabat

I can see both points of view here. As for the development of Hua Hin is concerned I think Venicebeach, you are making things very black and white.

As for the violence viewpoint I think that where you go and at what times will completely change your perspective. I hear many stories of the Night Bazaar areas that do sometimes involve young people and young Thais.

I too have noticed that Farangs are much more likely to resort to violence but then they are mostly here on holiday and many come from countries where alcohol is very expensive. There also seems to be a very high proportion of alcoholism within the Farang community in Hua Hin.

I have also noticed that attacks are much more likely to come from the older generation who are drinking more than they are accustomed to.

I have to point out that I didn't say that there was a lot of violence, just that the trend was that it was increasing, and this includes things like Thai teenagers on motorbikes throwing fireworks at farangs and farang bars, as well as things like bag snatches; whether these are just a symptom of Thai society problems or a response to farang behaviour is hard to tell, but certainly the Night Bazaar area has had increasing problems which I think can be directly connected to alcohol fuelled young Thais and farangs clashing. I have also heard that the Hin Nam Sai Suay club has regular trouble, but that is a Thai dominated place, so it may be a general pattern from young Thais rather than anything else, although the presence of young farangs may well add to this.
VB, you really seem to have a downer on older people, almost as if you don't want them around. I feel sorry for you if that is the case, as you are missing out on a lot of interesting and informative people who enjoy a good time as much as, if not more than, you do. Of course there are good and bad older people as there are of all ages, but you should learn to be a little less judgemental and generalising - remember, ALL generalisations are stupid! Image

Yes I agree and that is the sort of debate I was trying to start off in the "Streets of Thailand" thread.

A general rule of thumb noticed so far in most countries that have emerged from poverty to relative wealth is that crime and violence and a mixture of the both (e.g. muggings) increases.

Many Sociologists have made detailed studies of this phenomenon. The other point of course is that the town is expanding rapidly and the central areas always seem to be the focus of increased visible crime.

What I cannot understand is why so many farangs of all ages have this desire to visit areas that are known for trouble.

BTW I think this debate should continue on the thread mentioned above. The topic her is Disney Land. I can see the link though.

I dont have anything against old people. i have many friends with double the age of me.

but i have something against old people wich want to conservate everything like it was and are against any new things.

maybe you know following sentenses:

oh the youth of today is so bad!
In our time everything was much better!

that sort of old people i dont like.

I agree that there are sometimes problems between farangs and young thais in hua hin, but what has this to do with disneyland? I dont think that such familiy fascillity will encrease or solve the problems between thai and farang.

And it will not infect the behavior of those young thais with to much time you have been talking about.

VeniceBeach,

Have you ever thought that some things are worth conserving? Change isn't always for the better. And I'm not that old, still well under 40 - but, seeing how you post, I probably am double your age! Or more...

Dawn

Reckon your 3 times his mental age

VB Sorry mate I think you're a bit naive and think you need to spend some extended time here to appreciate the culture

Sure HH will change. 15 years ago it was a fishing village with a summer palace. Now it's a busy tourist resort but, BUT has retained it's culture and remains aloof from the hot spots. In the Uk it's the difference between Eastbourne and Clacton

There's a famous saying 'if it works why change it?'

If HH pursues a Pattaya move I for one would move and I'm not an old fogie. Let's face it, we all have that option. 'If you don't like it, move on'

I'm seen so many places in the UK, France and the states all lose their character through over development. The yob culture arrives and the little old market town is suddenly converted into publand and cheap tasteless Burger Kings, MacDonalds and inferior pizza parlours.

Sure, I'm all for development but it needs doing with taste and good planning

Rest my case :thumb:

oh please I thnk you can do better than that

When you lose the arguments you start getting personal or what. Kindergarden.

I know the thais you are only talking about at your beerbars with other farangs, a lot better than you, I guess.
I am at Hin Nam Sai suai at the nighttimes, i am at nightmarket. I dont have to have fear beeing sourroundet by young thais, because they know me, and they respect me as i do them.
