Bicycling in and around HH

So what is going on around here and where does it happen? This section is for discussion on local events, festivals, and holidays as well as activities and things to do.

I use a cycle around Hua Hin sometimes and although you obviously have to be very careful, it’s really not too bad around the centre especially if you get to know where all the small alleys and lanes are. Actually the traffic is so slow there that you can normally just weave your way through without any bother. I’ve got a pick-up truck, but sometimes I go to town on the bicycle as it’s quicker and you don’t need to worry about parking.
I think in some ways it’s safer on a good mountain-bike than on a small motorbike as you can stop a lot quicker if things go wrong.
The only bit that can be a problem is crossing Petchakasem road where you are better off using the traffic lights or getting off and crossing on foot.
I’ve never had a problem with security; I just use a normal bike lock against a post or something.

Thanks Steve

I may give it a cautious try next time out there in August!

One of our female freinds who stayed with us for a few months last summer used a mountain bike every day in HH and said that it was no diffrerent from London. I m not sure about that but she loved it!!!

I thought that it would be a good way to keep fit out there plus would minimise the parking problems down town. Also good way to learn the city
as just tend to use the main roads all the time.

Do you know where this cycle shop is? What station?

Cheers

If you look at this map:http://www.huahinafterdark.com/hua-hin-area-map.htm square E7, the PTT station is to the right of the main road heading north and the bike shop nearby.

Bicycling

Post by frankbangkok »

I have never had anything but good experiences bicycling in Hua Hin. All Thais I have met seem amazed at the distances we go on our bicycles. They are very supportive.

Hua Hin Bikes is just north of the PTT gas station which is slightly north of the Honda motorcycle dealer on Phetkasem Road. Some people apparently call it Pro Bikes.

Hua Hin Bikes is a quite good shop and handles Trek bikes. The other shop, further south is called LA bikes, handles Trek and GT bikes, but is not as professional. It seemed to be cheaper, possibly but they don't seem to know how to adjust the Shimano derailleur which Hua Hin Bikes does in five minutes for sixty baht.

Many Thanks

I will check out a new bike in August.

I think a Trek should suffice with a good lock

And cycle with caution!

Crime and bicycling

Post by frankbangkok »

This Saturday while I was bicycling north on Petkasaem Rd at about soi 102, two Thais on a motorcycle pulled along side and snatched my mobile phone. Reporting it to the police, they said that during football games be careful as many Thais lose money betting and turn to crime to pay their debts.

AIS at Market Village gave me a new SIM card (same number) free of charge so I just had to buy a new phone. Things could have been worse. But I learned not to carry my mobile phone on my belt while bicycling.
