I am driving on red plates in HH with registration in krabi province. I'm told by Honda that it doesnt matter but I guess it depends on how close it is to payday for the MIB

You can drive with red plates from sunrise to sunset.

I know this is correct because I got it wrong when I took my motorbike written test. I thought it was 6pm to 6am.

I pushed Toyota to get me my white plates within a month.

But they initially told me it was better to wait 3 months from October until January so that my car would officially be a year younger - which would increase the re-sale value.

I'm pretty sure I drove to Phuket on red plates when we bought our car 3 years ago. No problems at all but then we didn't meet any police looking for handouts.

Officially between 6 am to 6 pm. However, beware of imitation red plates. When I say imitation, it means that the plates are not officially issued by the Department of Transport.

The reason this happens is twofold - first off, they are really dealership plates, meant for the convenience of the dealer to move them around, not the customer.

Each dealership is issued a certain number of plates. Sometimes these are not sufficient, so the dealer goes and makes copies. It is these copies that can get you into trouble.

The difference is that the real plates have a raised embossing that looks like a circle and some letter in the middle and is about 5 cm in diameter. If you do not have these embossed plates, you're a prime target.

We bought our Toyota in Bangkok. . .and were also stopped in Bangkok on a subsequent trip there by a sharp-eyed MIB.

This was three or four years ago now and I dont remember the details of the fine etc. . .but Vincent is correct. Our red plates did not have that little embossed bit in the lower right hand corner.
