Double Speed Maxnet?

Post by repsol »

Hi there,

I was downloading something yesterday and realized it was going at about 170kb/s. I have a 1MBit premier maxnet line from TT&T which should not be able to download at 170kb/s.

If it would have been a small fie, someone could argue it was a wrong indicator, but I downloaded 1400MB in just a litle over 2 hours...

I checked my adsl modem settings, and to my surprise my line status says 2MBit download 1 MBit Upload... they've doubled my speed!

Is this a mistake, or did anyone else get a faster line as well?

p.s. don't you go and call TT&T now to tell them this repsol guy has double the speed he should have and that you want that, too :guns:

Thats nice for you, I have a 2Mbit line from CAT (Hinet) that runs at 200k if you're lucky and times out on any download over 10Meg.

log into your router (192.168.1.1 ?) and have a look.

TT&T upgraded a load of account this week, I went upto 3Mb. And was downloading at 290KB/s......

Am now back to 2 MB/s according to the router.

FYI, Maxnet Premier with a year contract. a year ago i was 1024/512, and pay no more now for the higher speed.

Talking about speeds... I have 1 Mb Premier from Max TT&T. Works well! Does anyone have experiences from the "Indy" (you can get twice the speed for less)???

I am seeing the same thing - speed tests to servers within Thailand show downloads at almost 3 mb/sec, uploads somewhat faster than 700 kb/sec. My router/modem shows that it is set up for 3 MB down 1 MB up.

A few large downloads have shown that the speeds are real. I upgraded my Ubuntu system in about 40 minutes - speed was about 2.3 mb/sec. The server was probably in Asia somewhere, maybe in Thailand.

I asked about Indy when we signed up for Premier. The man at TT&T said Premier was better if I needed fast international access. I do get good speed from the west coast of the USA - usually about 1.3 mb/sec down and 400 kb/sec up.

Maybe TT&T is charging extra for Premier because they are trying to deliver 1 mb/sec over the international lines. They may need to make the local service faster to support that. Just a guess.

Looks like I may have to ditch the hinet then and switch to Maxnet Premier, what does it cost you guys monthly?

I think it's about 1170 per month including VAT. I haven't gotten a bill yet, but the base price is 1090 with a one year contract during this promotion. At the end of the year, the base price may go to 3400 baht per month.

TT&T service was pretty good - we signed the contract and paid a deposit on a Thursday about noon. The wiring was installed Friday afternoon. The connection was active Saturday.

I have seen occasional dropouts, where the modem seems to lose sync for a couple of minutes, but nothing serious, and occasional slowdowns but they are very short term, a minute or two. The service is nearly as good as the 3 mb down 768 kb up connection I had in the US.

Disclaimer - Before I got MaxNet I used AIS through my cell phone for six months. After that ANYTHING would look good - even dialup. :D

Thanks for the info - I've tried nearly all of the providers in HH at some stage and found them all terrible. Hopefully things have improved now though it could be my location and state of external cabling (connection quality varies with proximity to town) that is letting me down.

Started with Maxnet 3 years ago and found it worse than dialup but this service seems to be better from your reports. Not interested in Thai server speed tests as I don't use Thai websites, what are your ping times to servers in the States? and what do you get from this speedtest: www.speedtest.net

My current 'hinet' package is fine for general browsing and email but try to download anything over 10 meg and it'll time out.

HHADfan ( nice name  ) just read your previous post with speedtest results - looks promising.

Here are mine from that same site using the same server in SanFran:

Down: 274
Up: 471
Ping: 475

This is from a 2048/1024 CAT connection  :cuss: :banghead: Its up and down more often than two pigs on a honeymoon.

I also tested to San Francisco. Ran three tests.

Ping time: 500 - 850 ms
Download: 2200 - 2600
Upload: 300 - 700

For tests to the USA I usually use dslreports.com, go to Tools, then Speed Tests.

[on edit] I directly pinged megapath.com in SF and got really consistent times of 325 - 330 ms.

Indy or Premier

Post by parbeau »

HHADfan; you seem to know what you´re talking about... I´m just a simple amateur (don´t even know how to clock the download speed...) and I´m coming back to my original question about Indy (double) or Premier: Would you recommend "downgrading" to Indy but maybe double the (stated) speed?
By the way; TT&T installed my connection 4 hours after signing Jan 2!!!
Had no trouble since...

Downgrading is pointless as it'll just mean there are more subscribers sharing the same line regardless of the advertised speed.

I'm definitely not a net geek, and have no particular knowledge of DSL. I just need a fast connection to communicate with clients in the US, so I had tested my connection. I think Buksida nailed it as far as more subscribers on the line at the Indy level.

If you're happy with your connection, why change it? Especially if you've had no trouble since January.

Great news that your connection has been reliable.

When I moved house two years ago, I had trouble with Telstra the largest ISP in Australia saying that my house was now to far from the exchange. I had only moved 1Km up the road from where I was previous.
I rang all other providers and all said the same, because Telstra have the monopoly of the line, if they cannot connect it, nor can we.

I did manage to find a local company that were able to do it, but only with ADSL1. When ADSL2 came out I went for it straight away, but found the lines keep dropping out all the time. Problem was that due to the distance I was from the exchange, there was to much noise on the line for it to operate in a stable fashion.

So what we did was to keep taking the speed back until the lines would not drop out. We managed to get it to work ok at about 1600 x 256. I just done the test and got 1296kbps down 272kbps up and 72ms ping.

The company I am with is called Amcom, so if there is anyone in Perth or South Australia that get the same answers from their ISP that I did, PM me and will give you the contact details.

It may be an idea that if any of you guys get problems with line dropout on the faster ADSL, ring your ISP and get them to ramp back the speed until the line stops dropping out and see how you go from there.

An interesting thing is what they have just done with our plans. They have actually given us an extra 15gb a month download, but only for use between midnight and 6.00am in the morning.

I still get my normal 10gb download that I have always had, but have now got the option of using the 15gb extra for any heavy downloads. I would imagine it had been done to try and free up users abusing the system in normal working hours.
If we go over our 10gb daytime limit, there is no extra charge but is just slowed down to 64kps operating speed.
