Yep but you will get lots for cooking farangclive wrote:I hadn't noticed Tesco Lotus selling Farangh food.

Last time I went to Villa Market in BKK I got fresh sage...
Could you imagine garlic, sage and salt pounded in a mortar until you get a smooth paste. You make a slit in a pork sirloin, spread the sage paste inside, close and secure with toothpicks. Just let it brown and cook it in a covered pan on a slow burner. You can add a half can of beer and drink the remaining beer (never waste food or drinks)... Rhaaaahhhhh... Life is nice

What do you think, Francios?
Will Villa stock spices to make a decent Indian curry? I've got to go to Penang next month and will stock up there.
By spices I mean whole coriander seeds, whole cumin seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric, whole cinnamon, cloves, garam massala etc.
If they do, it'll be curry city round here. I love cooking them and it'll save me an expensive trip to Penang every now and then.
I buy kilos of the spices down there. Even my wife has got used to the taste!!!

While Penang is a lovely place, and all that, why in the name of the wee man do you go there to buy spices? Why not buy them here in Hau Hin? There are various 'shops' in the day market that sell all you mention, with the possible exception of Garam Massala, which you can make yourself (and it tastes better than the 'shop-bought' stuff too!)
Just go into the market and look for one of those strange shops or stalls that seem to sell lots of different types of oil, as well as tinned and dried food. The best I have found have been quite close to the back of the market (away from Phetkasem), about half way along.
If it's any help, corriander is 'pak shee' in Thai (yes - the seeds as well as the leaves); cumin is 'yee-ra'; turmeric is 'kha-min' (I know it sounds like cumin, but it isn't!) Mustard (may be a bit more difficult to find, but keep trying) is 'moos-a-tard' in Thai (stolen word), and I can't remember cinnamon or cloves, but you can see them in bags on the counter.
Good luck with the hunt, and pm me if you want a half-decent recipe for Garam Massala...

Apart from that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play? - Tom Lehrer
Thanks for all the replies. My question was a bit tongue in cheek as I have to go to Penang for a visa and "Little India" is Spice City for me.
I'll look out for the local shops as this will hopefully be my last visa run after ten years of traveling for no good reason.
Bring on the rogan josh. Nothing quite like a good Kashmiri dish.

To be honest, I do not know. I wasn't looking for that kind of spices but if they do sell'm I will cook curries as well :-)lomuamart wrote:What do you think, Francios?
