Thinking back to the transliteration of the 'g' or 'k' sound. You'll often find that if it is the 'g' sound, then the letter K is used e.g. Kanchanburi or Koh (Samui). If it is the 'k' sound, then a Kh is used e.g. khai (egg).

Skip the romanization/transliteration all together and learn the thai alphabet. Its a steep learning curve, but once you know all the consonants and vowels, and tone id's it all makes more sense and you pronounce the words much easier. If your interested, I know a great teacher in Koaw tao..or Kaew Tao, or kow tow. .., about 200/hour.
