Judging cleanliness of a resturant by looking in the toilets

I have frequently judged the cleanliness of a resturant by the way that the toilets are managed and ckeaned. I have used this yardstick all over the world. It doesnt necessarily mean that if the toilets are not well kept that you are going to get a stomach ache the next day, but it does show how particular the staff are when it comes to Hygeine.

If the toilets are polished and standards are high, I often find that the kitchen , table cloths etc are clean.

Would like to start a list of resturants where the toilets are particularly outstanding, having a little girl aged 3 means that hygeine is all the more important.

In terms of what exactly ? Ambience ? Decor ? Optional extras ? Hits per month ? Medical insurance ?


Don't P**s in anything you wouldn't eat off and you will be ok apart from the constantly crossed legs and the bulging eyes .

your post on Toilet and the clealiness of Kitchen in Restaurants in Thailand does makes sense. It shows really how staff and management care about cleanliness 4 real.
I had once an American Lecturer @ Stamford who wrote a Book on Toilet conditions & Restaurant rewievs all over Thailand. I don't know how far he has been and if his book was released I'm sure it makes a prettty interesting reading!!!.

Its a very useful rule of thumb, if they don't care enough to keep the loo decent then it naturally raises suspicions about other areas that may not be in the line of sight.
Once went into a kebab place on the King's Rd, Chelsea and someone was sitting right outside the loo peeling spuds. Inside, the throne was somewhat "full". Went right back out and said to my wife this place may not be our kind of place.

I must say I always thought this tactic was peculiar to us women! But yes - Euro Bakery has to score high, and Admirals.
Just hope the staff remember to wash their hands after wielding the bleach

I'll vote for All In Hua Hin then as they have clean toilets and really nice artwork on the walls which makes a change from the "Darren woz ere" and "ring 07837364 for **** fun" you tend to find in toilets back home. Oh and their breakfasts are delicious too.

Saturday night was my first visit to this restaurant and while the service was on the dismal side.. .( Can we please get a table near a waiter?) the bathroom at Let's Sea restaurant is spectacular! Clean enough certainly and one of those where you walk in and say,"Wow!" (. . .thats a pleased "wow," not the other kind!)

The toilet at Let's sea is set on a sort of outdoor pond with plants and a fountain and you immediately wonder where the human waste is going if not into the surrounding decorative pond. The urinals are freestanding facing the pond and the cubicles are open in front so you can sit and gaze at the water. . .the doors are at the side so they are private enough.. .and yes, it all looked very clean, designed with real flair and certainly memorable.

Generalizing here that hotel toilets are probably a lot cleaner and more elegant than those found in restaurants anyway. If they have little cloth towels to wipe your hands on, A/C and fresh orchids. . .you are probably Ok for cleanliness.

But if you travel enough around Asia, you start to be very happy with a toilet when you open the cubicle door and find a sit-down toilet instead of the hole in the floor!

I still remember with horror my worst toilet experience somewhere in rural China. . .one of those where you walk in and walk right back out again because suddenly you just dont need to go anymore. (I wont go into details, but there were no cubicles and no toilets, just a rather large open room with long trenches in the floor already in use by several patrons.)

Clean toilets, excellent food both Thai and Western. It's usually full in the evening, but it's a great place to sit at lunch and watch the world go by.

It is not long ago that I remarked that Itsala was my favourite restaurant.
Apart from the food, location and service being good, the toilets are very clean too.

Tip - if your in Hua Hin and your bowels begin to bubble, avoid trouble in a pleasant environment. Go to the toilets next to American spare rib (upstairs from Macdonalds).

Anyway, what about the toilets in MacD's? They must surely be beyond approach.

Chas comments reminded me of my worst ever toilet experience. In the transit area at New Delhi airport. Squatties of course, but so much s..t splattered around it was untrue. After that ANY squattie is welcome, even on the trains in LOS. (try doing what you have to do while hanging on to the handrail for grim death.)
You guys have it easy in that department!
