What and where is the PI?
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

Vital Spark, the reply to your Q on prices of dairy produce was interesting, ie due to rising demand in other countries.
Here in the UK we haven't been fed that line. In fact we haven't really had an explanation at all apart from the usual 'production costs' stuff, and of course the ongoing problem with cows!
All I know is that a decent cheddar here now is the equivalent of about 1000 Bt a kilo. Butter is about £1.30 a pack for decent stuff. Many of the cheaper ones, at around £1, are actually nowhere near 80% butter and are full of 'bad' fats, which we are told not to eat anyway.

There is a world wide shortage of milk. Hence the high prices experienced recently.

If you can't find any in Lotus where I usually buy it. Try the grocrey store just over the rail tracks on the Pata Lu Water Fall road. (green building) I've seen it in there also. Sorry can't remember the store name.

Oh and leave some for me.

That's Gee Un Tung (sic).
Also you can that cheddar at the "Chinese" shop on Chomsin. On your left as you walk up it between Nebkahab and Petchkasem Roads. Last time I got a standard size block, I think it was 110 Baht. That was a while ago, so it's probably gone up.

food prices

Interesting stuff on butter prices. We noticed it just this month....we used to buy the soft butter all the time for toast but all of a sudden we noticed it wasn't available anywhere....

Finally found it at Big C but it was hugely expensive so we bought hard butter at .54......went back a week later and it was .81.

We haven't seen much of an increase on the cheese though.

I can't believe there's a milk shortage???? What would cause that? I'm more inclined to think it has something to do with 106 dollar a barrel oil, yeah?

If you want to drive that far, the day market in Cha Am is great....just moved into the new space across the street and is now cleaner, bigger and they're using the old space for a car park. You'll love it. Everything, including meat is incredibly cheap compared to Tesco, and it's more fun.......and no waiting in those long checkout lines.

Also on the beach road (turn west at the light) there's a new O.K. market built primarily for expats. Small, but has a great selection of stuff at reasonable prices, and is nice and clean and well kept.

Also, near Crawford's in the street running to the beach there's a new German restaurant......good food and they make their own meat products. Sausages and hot dogs are the best I've found in Thailand, and a pretty good potato salad......all available for take-out.

Well.. That's not only in Asia... We have encountered the same problem in Europe, i.e. in France. Bearing in mind Brussel gave subventions to the farmers to do something else than producing milk, implementing a kind of "milk quotas", we have the result now...
