cost of drink

Post by huahinsimon »

went to a couple of bars a few days ago and was surprised that both the cost of soda and beer had gone up to 50 for soda and 80 for Chang in both establishments. For the longest time soda had been 30 or 35 and Change 60-65. I'm not complaining just wondering if this is an across the board price hike.
I dont hold my beer well enough   to do extensive market research and dont want to drink a lot of expensive soda either. Perhaps I should just ask a few barkeeps, but I might get some interesting feed back via this post. (both positive :D and negative :guns: I'm sure)

cheers for 2008

Still better than prices on Samui, just returned from there and had night in Chaweng where its 100 baht a bottle!

They must be trying to make up for the lack of tourists this year!

Also read that prices of everything have increased due to the increase in fuel costs.

Hey there Simon,
I will tentatively be back in HH from 4th to 10th Feb. I know many times I have promised to catch up for a drink or ten, but now it would seem we have some valid research to conduct !! ( let me see.... how I can gear this activity for best tax benifit) :D

As I am also sure there will be no shortage of other HHAD members "stepping up to the plate" to volunteer for this particular line of research.... lets just call it a good 'ole Aussie Pub-Crawl !!!

Now.... how to fund this little venture... Who's giving out research grants at present...hmmmmm.

See you all in Feb. Looking forward !!

Davo.

Thai logic

Lack of customers--Hike up the prices

Result---------------Loss of more customers

Applies with property, rental, hotels, golf courses, restaurants and bars

Reduced profit margins, repeat business-----------What's that  :?

They've obviously learnt a lot from their Western Cousins - the British Landlord. I fondly remember the days when I could afford a night out at my local. Now its a can of value Tesco Bitter whilst watching the TV.

OK, maybe a bit of an exageration above, but greed is present the world over - it's not just been invented by Thai Bar Owners.

BB

Agree

Gone are the days when 4 pints of bitter or mild, pie and mushies and a trip to the Locano ballroom cost you 10 shillings and sixpence and a bonus if you scored!!!!

Showing my age now but a trip to the pub and a few gills was a social event then . Now it's TV and a few tinnies

One of the things I’ve noticed when I go back to the UK for a weekend is that now drinking in city centers is comparatively cheap. Maybe this is due to chains like Wetherspoons driving prices down.
I went to the pub in my parents local village last year and was surprised at how much more expensive it was.
When I first started drinking in the early eighties things were the opposite way around with city centre pubs charging much more, to the extent that a night in the city was something you only did once in a while.
As for prices in Hua Hin, I’ve never really paid that much attention to the actual cost, I just roughly budget how much I spend on the average night out. On that score I don’t seem to be spending much more than I always have. I suppose I might be getting older and drinking less!

which city centres??
£3 (plus) for a bottle of pils or becks, £2.30 in the locals!! that aint cheap!! especially when you can get a 6 bottle pack at supermarkets for £5
agree with the weatherspoons, amazing how they manage to make a profit at £1.60 a bottle, but with no music & very little atmosphere they can become a bit boring!
as for the thai prices, inflation is a worldwide thing!!

Redzonerocker, I go back to Nottingham, it has four Wetherspoons now and thousands of students. I only drink pints so I don’t know what bottles cost, but I seem to spend no more on a night out now than I did years ago. I can remember beer being over two pounds a pint on the South coast in the eighties.

Check on the prices of the drinks at a bar before you order if you go down Tao Takiab. Last night I found myself paying a staggering 360 Baht for three glasses of Maeking - I could buy two bottles of the stuff in Seven 11 for that price.
Obviously a mix up with another customer, the cashier said that I had ordered doubles, which I hadn't, the drinks were served in small rather than tall glasses and they certainly didn't taste any stronger than those I usually buy for 50 or 60 Baht.. The falang boss wasn't in the bar at that time but I will certainly call in again to pass on my comments.
Unfortunately the Thais seem to have no idea whatsoever of customer care, as we hear all too often from the bar ladies it is a never ending give me, give me, give me. Their principal is, Falang have money so squeeze as much out of them as possible
This and other bars should realise that if you treat the patrons like friends rather than walking ATM's they will return another night.

I was back in the UK this time last year for the 1st time in 25years and after all the moans that I get out here from UK people how dear it was. I found the opposite.

My local pub charged £2.50 for a pint of stellar and only really paid dearer when I went into London to see the football, but only a small amount.
Went out to lunch to a pub in St Albans and had bottles of Becks for £1.50, so is cheaper than we pay here in Australia at present.

A pint of Stella is now $8.80 at least in most places in Perth (other than happy hours) and a bottle of Stella/Becks/Heinikin will cost you from $6.50 upwards.

Never really bother on holidays about drink prices, more about the people you find to drink with I think.
If you worry about costs to much when you are on holiday, you have not budgeted properly for the trip in question.

St Albans ay, just up the road from me, £1.50 is a good price for a bottle of Becks, can't find that in my town.

Perhaps different for the ex pats, but I agree Chelsea, when I go on holiday I'm not that bothered about the price of a beer, as long as I can can have a few!
