Health and accident insurance

Post by parbeau »

Hi everybody!
I´m moving down to HH Dec 29 to live with my girlfriend. We rent the first six months and after that I intend to buy a house, or similar. I wonder if you have any good advice for a health and accident insurance. My present home insurance covers this field the first 45 days, but after that? I´m 54 years old and will - probably - remain a Swedish citizen while in Thailand.
Will appreciate all contributions on this (boring) subject!

Take a look at this earlier thread. Tony is worth contacting for a quote.

Thanks dtaai-maai!
Read the thread but wasn´t quite clear whether this guy Tony works for, or represents a major (Thai) company or not. Do you know?

parbeau,
First of all, welcome to Hua Hin and HHAD. Secondly, i think that the Tony mentioned is probably an agent for that particular insurance company, which doesn't mean paying more, just that he gets a commission for every new customer.
Thirdly, I am a little confused by this statement -
I´m 54 years old and will - probably - remain a Swedish citizen while in Thailand.
I don't know if you are aware of this, but you can never become a citizen of Thailand unless you were either born here, or your parents were. The only options you have otherwise are applying for residency, which by all accounts is not worth it and is a long process, or living here on either a retirement, business or non-immigrant visa, which will either entail trips out of Thailand every 90 days, or reporting to the nearest immigration office every 90 days if you have successfully obtained a years renewable extension to such a visa. Or have I misunderstood what you meant? :D

No problem, you didn´t "misunderstand" me. I just wanted to give some additional fact, or background, to my question, but now you made things perfectly clear to me! Thanks :P

Lev, your hearty recommendation of William Russell has led me to email them.

I am still looking for
A. accident insurance and
B. insurance for the contents of my home.

I posted on this a while back and got a couple of recommendations, but the field has changed and expanded, as well I managed to lose the contacts my first posts generated.

If anyone has personal experience with William Russell or really good experiences with another local company. . .and I am MOST interested of course in how quickly and fairly they handle claims, not in how efficient they are in taking my money! I would appreciate a few real life experiences before I buy. Please PM me if you dont want to post here. I would appreciate any help at all.

Gotta do this by New Year. . .one of my New Year's resolutions. ( I tend to procrastinate on something like this)

Chas, ask in your bank if they can help you, because most banks offer this kind of insurance you are looking for.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

BUPA have just opened an office on the left way out of HH to Cha Am, about Soi 12 ish. My experience with BUPA International is that they are pricey but never a problem with a claim. I am looking at the BUPA Thailand myself as it also covers international travel, though not so thoroughly as BUPA International.
